National Post
The Liberal government has committed to spending another $36 million for the development of the F-35 fighter jet, an aircraft Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said doesn't work.
The Liberals intend to continue in the F-35 program to draw out benefits for Canadian companies, while at the same time buying a rival firm's aircraft, the Boeing Super Hornet.
But defence analysts wonder how long F-35 builder Lockheed Martin, and Canada's allies, will allow the situation to continue.

The Liberal government's decision to purchase 18 Super Hornets as an interim "solution" will fundamentally hurt the Canadian Armed Forces and cost Canadian taxpayers jobs and billions of dollars.
The nebulous justification of the urgent "capability gap" runs contrary to the testimony of Lt.-Gen. Mike Hood, the head of the Royal Canadian Air Force, when just six months ago, he told the House of Commons National Defence Committee that the current fleet of CF-18's could carry out its missions until 2025.

As the dust settles after the announcement that Canada would buy 18 Super Hornet fighter jets, Defence Watch readers have raised an interesting question.
Will any of those 18 aircraft be EA-18G Growlers?
A variant of the Super Hornet, the EA-18G Growler provides tactical jamming and electronic protection. If Canada were to acquire those type of aircraft — or at least some to be part of that 18-plane order — then that would be a truly game-changing development.

Flags are flying at half-mast in Fisherville, ON, as the small, rural hamlet near Hamilton mourns Capt. Thomas McQueen, a Canadian Forces Pilot who was killed in a fatal fighter jet crash near Cold Lake, AB.
The street on which the family lives was full of Canadian flags, billowing in the wind. At the end of the McQueen family's long driveway, a neighbour has erected a memorial that reads "Tx Thomas," which is impossible to miss for its size.

Plans for a new residential community at CFB Rockcliffe were unveiled recently when the development group — including Canada Lands Company, the Algonquins of Ontario and three local builders — presented the official plan for a sustainable 310-acre community that will house 10,000 residents.
After a decade of public consultations, various proposed plans, and stalls, the group launched Wateridge Village, which will be a mixed-use community that will include single-family homes and low to mid-rise residential buildings, as well as retail and office space, green spaces and trails.

The Avro Lancaster is one of the most iconic aircraft of the Second World War. There are only a handful still in existence.
In light of the news that a deal has been struck to save what is probably the last restorable Lancaster bomber, although it will never fly again, we talk to a man intimately involved with one of the world's only two airworthy Lancasters.

I recently wrote about Flight Sergeant Allen Ross, a wireless operator who died in the Second World War when his bomber was shot down over Germany.
He was 20, from New Westminster. Of a seven-man crew, he was the only RCAF member on the plane; all the others were British. His parents, Edwin and Margaret Ross, were informed only that their son had been buried in a cemetery in northern Germany, and went to their own graves never knowing why or where he died.
