More than 10 years after then-prime minister Paul Martin said replacing Canada's ancient military search-and-rescue planes would be made a "major priority," the federal government has finally settled on a winner. The Liberal government recently announced that Canada will spend $2.3 billion to buy 16 new military search-and-rescue aircraft from European aerospace giant Airbus, the first of which will touch down in 2019.

Six years after ripping into the Conservative government's cost estimates for F-35 stealth fighters, Parliament's budgetary watchdog says it is digging into the Liberal plan to purchase "interim" Super Hornet jets.
The Liberal government announced it planned to buy 18 Super Hornets as a stop-gap until a competition to find a replacement for the air force's aging fleet of CF-18 fighter jets could be held in five years.
Ministers have admitted that they have an idea how much the Super Hornets will cost and that it will be more expensive in the long run for taxpayers, but they have refused to say by how much.

A multi-billion dollar deal to purchase a new fleet of search-and-rescue planes will likely see a maintenance hub created in Winnipeg.
The federal government recently announced it is purchasing 16 Airbus C-295W planes.
The $4.7 billion deal also includes the creation of a training centre in British Columbia and includes a subcontract with PAL Aerospace, a company owned by Winnipeg's Exchange Income Corporation, to help with maintaining the new fleet.

A military funeral for a Canadian Air Force pilot killed in a plane crash last week was held Wednesday at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Mount Hope, ON.
Capt. Thomas McQueen, 29, died after the CF-18 he was flying crashed during a training exercise near the Alberta-Saskatchewan border.
Four CF-18 Hornets from 3 Wing Bagotville, QC, performed a flyby after the service.
Then a procession began to travel along an extended Highway of Heroes to Ottawa for a private burial at the Beechwood National Cemetery of Canada.

The Runnymede Memorial overlooks the River Thames on Cooper's Hill at Englefield Green between Windsor and Egham, United Kingdom, 6.4 kilometres from Windsor, in Surrey. Behind its arched doorways are plaques bearing the names of some 20,000 allied aircrew who gave their lives during the Second World War, and whose final resting places are unknown. To this day, efforts are ongoing to investigate any leads that might identify the locations of these heroes.

Museums in Trenton and Petawawa have taken possession of the two remaining RCAF CH-147 D-model Chinook helicopters. The aircraft both served during the Afghan war.
These two aircraft have been donated to the National Air Force Museum of Canada and the Canadian Forces Base Petawawa Military Museum, respectively, the Department of National Defence pointed out.
