Billy Bishop, Canada’s first Air Force Victoria Cross winner

On June 2, 1917, Captain William Avery “Billy” Bishop took off from Filescamp Farm, his home base with No. 60 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, near Arras in northern France, on a daring early morning mission. It was a mission planned “after much thought”, according to his own words in Winged Warfare, first published in 1918.

Canadian Armed Forces conclude recovery operation of Cyclone helicopter crash

The military announced in a press briefing on Wednesday that it has decided to conclude the recovery operation for a Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) CH-148 Cyclone following a crash that resulted in the deaths of six service members. The recovery plan was led by a combined Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and United States navy (USN) team.

Ejection system in fatal Snowbirds crash was not most updated version available, National Defence confirms
The Star
The Defence Department has confirmed that the ejection system on the Snowbirds jet that crashed and claimed the life of Capt. Jenn Casey was not the most updated version of the equipment available, although it did get an upgrade in 2003. Experts say more modern systems offer a better chance of surviving ejection in the conditions under which the Snowbirds fly.

Military must test more soldiers deployed to long-term care homes, health expert warns

Canadian troops serving in long-term care facilities are not being uniformly tested for the novel coronavirus — an omission that alarms a leading health and safety policy expert. In response to questions from CBC News, the Department of National Defence (DND) said that soldiers, sailors and aircrew throughout the Canadian Forces are tested if they show symptoms of the virus.

Military returning to work amid readiness concerns as coronavirus stretches on

The Canadian Forces are getting ready to head back to work as the coronavirus pandemic continues to stretch on and military officials face concerns that keeping activities on pause could reduce readiness. Roughly 60,000 of the 68,000 members of the Canadian military were ordered into isolation in April as the force shored up its ability to respond to any demands resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.

Snowbird investigation focusing on possible bird strike before fatal crash

Canadian air force crash investigators are looking at a bird strike as the probable cause of the crash of a Snowbird demonstration jet in Kamloops, British Columbia last month. The accident killed Capt. Jenn Casey, the public affairs officer for the aerobatics team.
