From the outset of planning for Operation "Overlord" (the codeword for the Invasion of Normandy), it was recognized that the Allied air forces would have a vital role. Previous amphibious landings in the Mediterranean Theatre had underlined the fact that "when critical land operations are in progress, army cooperation is not simply a specialized activity of part of an air force. It is the function of the entire force, with all its available strength". The top allied planners took this to heart when putting together the mountain of details necessary for a successful landing in Occupied France.
The federal Liberal government has inked a sole-source deal with Quebec aerospace firm Bombardier to purchase two new Challenger jets to replace half the Canadian Armed Forces' existing executive aircraft fleet. The $105 million contract follows recent warnings from defence officials that two of the military's four existing aircraft would no longer be allowed to fly in many countries within a few years because of outdated technology.
The US Air Force will pit an advanced autonomous aircraft against a piloted plane in a challenge set for July 2021. The project could eventually lead to unpiloted fighter aircraft that use artificial intelligence (AI).
Perhaps only Donald Trump could turn a withdrawal of troops into an act of aggression. The U.S. president has directed the Pentagon to reduce sharply the number of U.S. military forces stationed in Germany, where a heavy presence of GIs has long served as a symbol of Washington's commitment to protecting its European allies.
The RAF Benevolent Fund has today launched a major new campaign in its centenary year. We are urging the public to help us repay the debt we all owe to our RAF veterans and their families who are in need of help. In particular, we need to reach out to the National Service and World War Two veterans, before it's too late. They put on the uniform of our country when we needed them to, the least we can do is be there for them when they themselves need our help.
