Governor McMaster Announcement on (Phase 1a) Covid Vaccine
Governor McMaster announced yesterday that healthcare workers (Phase 1a) have until 1/15 to schedule their vaccinations. Employers should be reaching out to hospitals on behalf of their employees to grant them access to the VAMS system. We’ve had a number of questions from members and this is the most recent information which allows PTs/PTAs not already employed at the large hospital systems access to the vaccines.

For an exercise 'snack,' try the new standing 7-minute workout
The New York Times
Make 2021 the year of the exercise snack.
Just as you might grab a handful of chips or nuts to break the monotony of your day, an exercise “snack” is a short burst of movement you can enjoy at home or in the office or outdoors. It can last for mere seconds or for several minutes. You can do it while talking on the phone or just because you want to take an hourly break from sitting in your chair. You don’t even have to change your clothes.

Which exercise regimen works best to ease lower back pain?
HealthDay
Chronic lower back pain can make the most routine tasks difficult. But a new study suggests patients can learn new, practical and less painful ways to move through individualized "motor skills training," or MST.
A two-year study of nearly 150 patients found that MST appears to better relieve disability from lower back pain than a more common but less-tailored exercise regimen broadly focused on improving strength and flexibility.

Forbes
Physical therapists have become a very important part of American medical services. As their numbers have grown, so has the need for physical therapist assistants. As a result, the popularity of a career in physical therapy assistance has grown as well. In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook, the employment of physical therapist assistants is forecasted to increase by 29% — much faster than average — over the period 2019 to 2029. That means adding 43,000 new physical therapist assistant jobs over the next decade.

Underutilization of physical therapy for symptomatic women with MS during and following pregnancy
DocWire News
Many patients with MS continue to have symptoms of their disease even when inflammatory activity is reduced by DMTs. Although disease activity tends to be reduced during pregnancy – especially in the third trimester – women with MS can experience ongoing symptoms during pregnancy, or new ones in the immediate postpartum period, that degrade quality of life. While many MS-related and postpartum symptoms can be improved with physical therapy (PT), there are currently no guidelines on pregnancy-related rehabilitation in MS. In this analysis, we evaluated the prevalence of PT-amenable symptoms and patterns of PT referrals in a cohort of UCSF MS Clinic patients who became pregnant.
