Loading recommendations for muscle strength, hypertrophy, and local endurance: A re-examination of the repetition continuum
Sports
Loading recommendations for resistance training are typically prescribed along what has come to be known as the “repetition continuum”, which proposes that the number of repetitions performed at a given magnitude of load will result in specific adaptations. Specifically, the theory postulates that heavy load training optimizes increases maximal strength, moderate load training optimizes increases muscle hypertrophy, and low-load training optimizes increases local muscular endurance.

Shaping our next 100 years: Creating a tool for change
APTA
As we celebrate the American Physical Therapy Association’s centennial and recognize Black History Month against the backdrop of COVID-19 and the national outcry about anti-Black racism, we might also reflect on the role of the profession and the organization in the perpetuation and attenuation of social and health injustices.

EQ for PTs: How to be an emotionally intelligent clinician
WebPT
“There are four components of emotional intelligence…I think you are deficient in three of those four. Listen, you don’t develop it out of the womb, it’s something you gain over life, and I’m not talking down to you.” That’s what recent Bachelorette contestant Bennett Jordan said to Noah Erb as he condescendingly gifted him the book On Emotional Intelligence, a Harvard Business Review collection of articles addressing the subject. After observing the many ways Bennett repeatedly mishandled relationship conflicts on the show—including this interaction—I’d advise that he hang on to his copy and give it another read.

What high patient engagement means for reputation management

Patient engagement can drive the success of a rehab therapy business in more ways than one. Research has shown that highly engaged patients can lead to better functional outcomes as well as positive care experiences. Now, these same benefits can be applied to bolster a practice’s online reputation.

The odyssey of the PT patient: Why the pre-care experience matters
Evidence in Motion
When we describe the patient experience or the patient journey, we usually begin the story the moment the patient walks through the doors of a PT clinic—or maybe the moment a patient reaches out to schedule an appointment. The problem is that both of these starting points describe the patient journey as it relates to us—therapy providers.
In reality, the patient journey doesn’t begin with a patient’s initial evaluation—or even with the patient’s initial call to schedule an appointment.

A knowledge translation framework for optimizing physical therapy in patients with heart failure
Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Jouranl
The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) has supported the development of clinical practice guidelines to promote and support evidence-based practice and reduce unwarranted practice variation. Essential to the success of this effort is the generation of knowledge translation—a concept that emphasizes the translation of global knowledge to an application that can be effectively integrated into clinical practice. The Physical Therapy Clinical Practice Guideline for the Management of Individuals with Heart Failure published in the Physical Therapy Journal in January 2020 provides a broad base of knowledge related to evidence-based treatment interventions for patients with heart failure. However, the application and integration of this knowledge in clinical practice need further elucidation.

New APTA TV and radio spot will promote physical activity and physical therapy
APTA
Most Americans aren't getting the recommended amount of physical activity — a health crisis that was present before COVID-19 and shouldn't wait for the pandemic to end before being addressed.
That's the subject of APTA’s new public service announcement, which is set to debut online next week and be released to TV and radio stations nationwide.
