.APTA-South Carolina News
Letter from the Incoming President
Hello,
I want to thank you for the opportunity to serve you. This is first and foremost a member organization which means that it does not exist without you. You have a choice in how you spend your money and your time and the fact that you choose to dedicate those resources to our chapter is inspiring.
To introduce myself, I am a staff physical therapist at Lexington Medical Center in Outpatient Rehabilitation Services specializing in treating patients with pelvic health concerns. I am at my best when I am educating patients and helping empower them to gain better control of their physical health and wellness along the lifespan. I also love to read, would always rather be walking than sitting still, and you aren’t likely to see me without my Starbucks in hand.
The value of APTA membership, and service to the profession, was instilled in me early on during my DPT education at the Medical College of Georgia. Upon moving to the Midlands area of South Carolina in 2013 I knew that I wanted to be involved in the APTA-SC chapter. From my time working with the Legislative Committee to the Nominating Committee and most recently as VP on the Board of Directors, I have been amazed by what this chapter has been able to achieve, and I value the relationships I have made as a result. I also recognize that we have many opportunities for growth from engaging membership, to advocating for legislation that supports our profession, to ensuring that the chapter reflects the diversity and experiences of the professionals and students in our state.
I had the pleasure of meeting several of you at Annual Conference this past weekend at MUSC and I look forward to interacting with many more of you in the year to come. I hope that if you are so inclined you would consider where your interests lie and how you could express those interests on the committee or district level and beyond!
Be well,
Kristen Vick PT, DPT
President, American Physical Therapy Association — South Carolina

APTA-SC Recognizes Outgoing President Kristen Mason
The APTA-SC Board of Directors recognizes Kristen Mason for her many years of service to APTA-SC. As President over the last two years, Kristen has served tirelessly to navigate the chapter through COVID-19 challenges including transitioning to virtual events, maintaining membership, and assisting in securing telehealth services during the pandemic emergency. She was vital in helping orchestrate a return to in-person Annual Conference last weekend at MUSC. Including her time serving as President, Kristen spent 8 years on the Board of Directors for APTA-SC serving as Director, Secretary, and Vice President. She carries a wealth of institutional knowledge that cannot easily be replaced and we thank her for her dedication and commitment to our profession and our state.

Self-leadership is critical for all physical therapists
Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Journal
Evidence that supports the explicit need to develop leadership skills at all levels of clinical practice is prevalent; yet intentional development of "self-leadership" within healthcare, and particularly within physical therapy, remains slow, fragmented, and inconsistent. Delineation and standardization of the definition of leadership and the approach to develop leadership skills in individuals practicing within healthcare continues to be debated producing several key dilemmas.
