The University of South Florida and Tampa Fire Rescue have launched a randomized controlled trial to assess the effectiveness of a worksite exercise regimen targeted to reduce the risk of low back injury and disability in firefighters — a physically demanding occupation particularly prone to back problems that can lead to chronic pain and early retirement.
If this pivotal trial proves successful, the exercise training program could be implemented across the country to improve the health, safety and preparedness of the nation's firefighters.

Between treating patients, completing CEUs, running a business, and managing staff, it's hard to have a life outside of work; heck, it's probably difficult to keep your head on straight some days. That all comes with the territory of being a private practice PT. But with so many tasks and people competing for your attention, you might find yourself dealing with a bad case of burnout.
So, how do you wear so many hats – and juggle so many responsibilities – and still save time in your schedule for all the things you love?

Among the myriad benefits of exercise, another may be prevention against cancer, a recent study suggests.
The mouse-based study was published recently in Cell Metabolism.
According to Line Pedersen and Pernille Hojman, and the rest of their research team at University of Copenhagen, mice who trained regularly on a wheel demonstrated decreased growth of multiple types of tumors, including skin, liver, and lung cancers, as well as a reduced chance of developing cancer in the first place.

Telerehabilitation-based physical therapy assessments for musculoskeletal disorders — some of them, anyway — fare quite well when stacked up against face-to-face assessments, according to authors of a new systematic review. And while the news is mostly good for TR, authors say that more research is needed to see if this comparability holds up when applied to larger numbers of real patients, and in settings that are less than optimal.

Hiring the right person for your practice can be tricky, because if you want to find a true "gem," you have to evaluate more than a person's qualifications. You have to hire for good culture-fit, too. And unfortunately, that's a quality you aren't going to find on any job board – or even a resumé, for that matter. This special "it" factor is something you have to intentionally look for during the hiring process. So, why is culture fit so important? Well, research shows that when you hire for culture-fit, your employees are happier, perform better at work, and are more likely to stick around. Sounds ideal, right?

Typical toddlers simultaneously spend about three hours a day in physical activity, play and engagement with objects such as toys, while their peers with mobility disabilities are less likely to engage in all of those behaviors at the same time, new research from Oregon State University shows.
The study shows the marked differences in play and activity among toddlers with and without disabilities. It also underscores the need for young children with disabilities to have opportunities to play and explore in the same manner as their peers, said the study's lead author, Sam Logan.

A large percentage of respondents – 82 percent – to a recent survey note that, when it comes to exercise, how it makes one feel is more important than how it makes one look.
The survey was commissioned by Blink Fitness and conducted online by Harris Poll in February 2016 among more than 2,000 U.S. adults.
"For many Americans, stepping foot into a gym can feel like walking straight into the lion's den," says Todd Magazine, president of New York-based Blink Fitness, in a media release. "The survey results confirmed that we were onto something. We're focusing on the emotional and experiential benefits of exercise instead of industry norms like rapid weight loss and big muscles."
