UHC introduces employer-sponsored, virtual care physical therapy

UnitedHealthcare is introducing access to virtual care physical therapy for members in employer-sponsored health plans who suffer from musculoskeletal issues, according to an emailed press release. "UnitedHealthcare's Virtual Physical Therapy program offers people the convenience of 24/7 access to PT coaching sessions at home or on the go, further enhancing our holistic approach to help address musculoskeletal issues by combining advanced technology with proactive engagement, personalized support, and consumer-centric benefit designs," said Russell Amundson, MD, national senior medical director at UnitedHealthcare.

My husband, Todd, gets twice-weekly physical therapy, which significantly improves his quality of life with ALS. Six years ago, Todd was having pain in his shoulders, and his elbows would not fully straighten, making it difficult for him to use his wheelchair. His doctor ordered physical and occupational therapy evaluations through a home health agency. The occupational therapist crafted custom splints to straighten Todd’s arms. She also taught me how to apply kinesiology tape to an ankle he had rolled. We discovered that this also helped reduce the edema in his feet and ankles.

Some children with cerebral palsy and scoliosis may not need pelvic fixation, per study

A new Michigan Medicine study finds that some children with cerebral palsy and scoliosis do not require pelvic fixation when undergoing growing rod treatment, potentially avoiding several complications. Using data from around 20 health systems, researchers analyzed nearly 100 pediatric patients with cerebral palsy and scoliosis treated with growth-friendly implants, in which expandable rods are inserted into the back to help control the spinal curvature while still allowing the spine to grow.
