SCAPTA
APTA is embarking on a 3-year pilot project that will design and build a framework for a robust early-career community that motivates and inspires members. To help advance this work, APTA is seeking volunteers for the Board appointed Early Career Team (ECT). If you or someone you know is an early-career member and chooses to answer the call, you will join a team of collaborative workers, innovative and strategic thinkers who will champion the work of the ECT and serve as ambassadors for the early career community. This is a great opportunity to work with APTA staff, components, and other volunteer leaders on issues that directly affect early career PTs and PTAs. To be considered for the ECT, interested members must have an updated profile in the Volunteer Interest Pool. To submit an application, be sure to click "Apply for Current Vacancies." The application deadline is June 23.

Although a number of new models of care have emerged to decrease hospital readmissions in Medicare patients, they "do not adequately address functional deficits," say the authors of a recent "Perspectives" article e-published ahead of print in Physical Therapy, APTA's science journal.
Experts note that "hospital readmission rates after acute care discharge are 3 times higher if physical therapist discharge recommendations are replaced with less intensive interventions," yet the current care transition models do not formally include PTs in assessing or treating any functional impairments or risk factors.

If this 'overreaching' is not addressed, it could lead to overtraining syndrome, in which an athlete trains beyond the body's ability to recover, according to a media release from Quest Diagnostics.

Accountable care organizations participating the Medicare Shared Savings Program will begin operating under some new rules designed to incentivize participation in the program while continuing the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid's evolution toward value-based payment.
Under the new rule, ACOs that sign up for a second or subsequent contract period will be subject to a benchmarking process based on regional rather than national spending data – a move aimed at acknowledging the fact that health care costs aren't the same across the country.

Lauren Milligan writes: "When I go clothes shopping, I usually head straight to the clearance rack, but—as my husband loves to remind me – there's a solid reason some of those items didn't sell for full-price. Sure, sometimes the manufacturer made too many – or a particular style didn't sell as well as planned. Most of the time, though, the discounted items are simply poor quality – and that's why it's crucial to be able to spot the difference between cheap and inexpensive. The same is true for billing software. To make sure you aren't stuck using the billing software version of fast fashion, be sure to look for these must-have features."

For anyone who has spent months recovering from a shoulder injury, car accident or stroke, physiotherapy can be a slow and painful healing process. It also relies on a lot of repetitive exercises that can bore even the most self-disciplined of patients.
Cosmin Mihaiu, a 26-year-old Romanian who co-founded Mira Rehab, knows this well, having broken his arm falling from a tree aged seven and then struggling through six weeks in a cast followed by six weeks of physiotherapy.
Mihaiu has channelled this memory to create a prototype for software that would "gamify" physiotherapy.
