Results of a new systematic review and meta-analysis point to stronger evidence that when it comes to acute hamstring injuries, rehabilitation exercises work—and platelet-rich plasma injections don't.
The study, which updated an earlier review published in 2012, analyzed 10 randomized clinical trials — 6 of which were new since the previous publication — that focused on conservative interventions for acute hamstring injuries. A total of 526 participants were included in the trials with an average age of 20. All participants had some connection to sports, and most were male.

Rehabilitation via video conferencing may be a viable alternative to in-person physical therapy following total knee replacement surgery, a new study suggests.
The study, which appeared in the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, compared the outcomes of 205 total knee replacement surgery patients who received either in-person physical therapy or the same instructions via an interactive video teleconference — or "telerehabilitation" — following their discharges.

The pain was excruciating, says Barbara Fried of the time she tore her rotator cuff. While the two were sailing through particularly rough seas, a banister slammed into Barbara's shoulder, leaving her bent over double in agony. Both procedures failed — a common occurrence in older adults in which an estimated 45 percent of rotator cuff surgeries fail, according to a 2013 Orthopaedic Practice article written by Dr. David Luedeka and Dr. Lori Michener, a newly appointed professor of clinical physical therapy at the USC Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy. Luedeka's and Michener's approach to physical therapy treatment for patients with injured rotator cuffs involves having the patient go through a phased 18-month strengthening program. Her physical therapy success story led Fried to donate $463,066 to fund a two-year grant for Michener's continued research on a pilot study for implementing the closed-chain stabilization approach for treating rotator cuff tears. The research will take place in the Clinical Biomechanics Orthopedics and Sports Outcome Research lab, of which Michener is the director.

As a private practice physical therapy provider, you've made — and have yet to make — a number of decisions. Some of these decisions are easy; others, maybe not so much. For example, choosing which ice cream flavor to eat on a Friday afternoon might prove to be one of the toughest calls you have to make in your career. But no matter how hard the decision might seem, you don't need to be afraid to pick a stance: You just need to do some research.

New research suggests damage to the fatty sheaths around the brain's nerve fibers — not injury severity — might explain why some youngsters bounce back quickly from a traumatic brain injury while others suffer side effects for years.
A study conducted by researchers at UCLA and the University of Southern California identified possible biomarkers physicians could use to predict higher-risk patients who require closer monitoring.

A new study from the Netherlands is lending more support to the value of exercise during the early stages of adjuvant treatment for breast cancer. Researchers say that a combination of supervised strength and aerobic training not only reduces fatigue, but helps patients actually increase muscle fitness during the first 18 weeks of treatment. While researchers had anticipated that fatigue levels would drop for the exercise group, they were surprised to find that the exercise program not only offset the deconditioning effect of chemotherapy and other adjuvant treatments, but actually increased muscle strength.

Therapy pools are commonly implemented into many types of facilities: senior living communities, physical therapy clinics, hospitals, sports medicine facilities and team athletic training facilities. The final product typically ends up being the crown jewel of the facility, but there are a lot of details required in order to get there. One of the key pieces to having a great pool room is ensuring the design is optimized for your patients and staff.
