SCAPTA
This course was recorded on Sept. 22 and is now available on the APTA Learning Center, FREE to members and non-members. It is designed to introduce physical therapists to the new evaluation and reevaluation codes, and teach therapists how to select the appropriate evaluation code based on patient presentation. The new evaluation codes are split into 3 levels: low complexity evaluation, moderate complexity evaluation, and high complexity evaluation. Physical therapists will need to select the appropriate evaluation level based on 4 components: patient history, examination, patient presentation, and complexity of clinical decision making. This course includes patient scenarios specific to a variety of physical therapist practice settings, including cardiovascular and pulmonary, geriatrics, neurology, orthopedics, pediatrics, and private practice. FREE to members and non-members. Go to: http://learningcenter.apta.org/
*Please feel free to share this information with members and non-members, and promote to your component members.

SCAPTA would like to congratulate Elliot Cleveland, SPT for his submission titled: "Musician’s Health: Where Musicians go for healing" to the Private Practice Section, APTA - PPS 2016 Student Contest. This honor comes with registration, lodging, travel stipend AND a free PPS membership for an entire year. He was joined by two other submissions from the Medical University of South Carolina that were described as "top tier". The contest asks students to submit an original innovative business idea that is a viable business option for private practitioners to utilize outside of the clinic. Additional information can be gathered at this link: http://www.ppsapta.org/c/StudentContest.cfm
Elliot's idea described below comes from his passion for music and his long standing participation in performance.
Overview of Services: Musician’s Health (MH) will be based out of an existing outpatient orthopedic physical therapy clinic in Charleston, SC and offer three distinguishing services:
For local musicians, MH will offer outpatient physical therapy services by a musician’s health expert to treat and prevent injury. The therapist will focus on ergonomics involved in playing the instrument, optimize performance to decrease physical demands, and provide exercises that are uniquely beneficial to the musician.
For musicians on the road, MH will provide cash-based therapy services via Skype. All that is needed for both parties is Wi-Fi, a Skype account, and video and audio technology. Because this service is portable, appointments can be scheduled virtually anytime, from anywhere. This allows the musician to have continued access to the same physical therapist no matter where he or she is located.
For large ensembles (typically 70 or more members), MH will provide a physical therapist to attend rehearsals and performances, evaluate injury risk in the musicians, develop an injury prevention plan for the ensemble, and treat any injuries that may occur during the time the therapist is present. This includes orchestras, marching bands, drum corps, and other musical ensembles. Because these ensembles are so large and have a great community presence, this will be an excellent way to market and give back to the community.
So if you see this smiling face, please congratulate him on this awesome accomplishment! Well done, Elliot!

About 20 percent of health care personnel didn't receive influenza vaccines during the 2015-2016 flu season, with employees in long-term care settings reporting an even higher – albeit improved – rate of non-vaccination, according to new data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The report, based on an opt-in Internet panel survey of 2,258 health care personnel during March and April 2016, found that the overall rates didn't change much between the 2014-2015 and most recent flu season, with the most recent 79 percent rate more or less unchanged from the previous year's rate of 77.3 percent.

A study appearing in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine suggests that, among workers with major injuries, higher BMI may be associated with higher workers’ compensation costs.
In the study, Dr. Edward J. Bernacki of University of Texas at Austin and colleagues compared the workers’ compensation costs and outcomes among about 2,300 injured workers in Louisiana, regarding whether they were obese, overweight or normal weight.

Millions of Americans suffer from non-fatal workplace injuries each year. Unfortunately, 3.3 Americans will suffer a workplace injury from which they won’t recover. When a patient suffers from a workplace injury, it can be costly both to the patient and to the employer. The essential goal becomes returning the worker to full function so they can participate in their daily lives and livelihood.

Team-based care has been shown to offer more comprehensive benefits to patients when compared to standard physician-based care alone in clinics for chronic conditions. However, apart from grant-funded multidisciplinary clinics, there are no reports on the usage of same-day physical therapy consults within a daily outpatient neuromuscular disease physician clinic. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of same-day PT consults at the University of Utah's outpatient Clinical Neurosciences Center.

Are you a self-described "non-athlete?" Do you subscribe to the myth that physical therapy is only for star athletes or those who have just had some kind of major surgery? Have you ever wondered, "Who is physical therapy for?" If so, we've got great news for you: physical therapy is for everyone. PTs can help diabetics find ways to stay active and help keep their blood sugar in check. People suffering from progressive conditions like Parkinson's and Multiple Sclerosis can also benefit from seeing a physical therapist for strengthening, mobility and fall prevention.

Almost half of the female participants in a recent study noted that they experienced a diagnosed or suspected concussion, but didn’t report it to their coaches or trainers.
"Our results suggest that, most of the time, the athlete who is experiencing symptoms of a concussion doesn’t even recognize it as a concussion," comments the study’s lead author Tracy McDonald, MSN, RN, CCRN, of The University of Kansas Hospital, Kansas City. "Even when they do recognize it as a concussion, they are unlikely to report it to seek help."

It may be time to hit the golf course because a study has found the sport can improve both physical and mental health.
Scientists analyzed findings from 5,000 studies looking at associations between golf and well-being and found regular playing may prevent chronic illness, improve mental health and increase life expectancy.
These benefits can largely be explained by the exercise associated with golf. The study found that players typically burned a minimum of 500 calories over 18 holes.

It’s an interesting political climate right now and changes in health care policy truly impact our industry. At a recent Medicare conference, the speaker shared that in some regions of the U.S., the level of reimbursement for some therapeutic services has gone down 20 percent in the past five years.
In addition, under some health insurance plans, accessibility for therapy services has become increasingly difficult, requiring providers to spend more administrative time up front to keep up with pre-authorization requirements as well as navigate through ever-changing insurance policies.
