SCAPTA
The South Carolina Chapter of American Physical Therapy Association has finalized an agreement with Nardone Consulting Group, Inc. (NCG) for association management services beginning January 2, 2020. After identifying the need for volunteer-driven non-profit associations to have access to the parts of association management they need without the overhead of a fulltime team, NCG was founded in 2005 to deliver such services to associations in a personalized fashion to non-profits from state level to global in scope.

CMS’s 2020 Physician Fee Schedule Final Rule is in. CMS decreased the burden of administration and reimbursement for services provided by PTAs. Rather than the 15% cut, CMS would cut 10% when services are provided by a PTA/OTA for 10% or more of the total therapy time. However, it maintained the estimated 8% cut for outpatient therapy services. Other professions are also expected to decrease between 6-10%, including ophthalmology and chiropractic care. This proposal is set to take effect in 2021.
Also, CMS has issued a final ruling to prevent providers from re-entering Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIP through creating agreements with other companies or changing names if they’ve been officially sanctioned by CMS. The operational side of this rule has not been released, and at this time CMS is conducting reviews of enrolled providers to determine associations with those who may have been sanctioned. APTA has submitted comments regarding the administrative burden this creates, which may outweigh the benefit. If you have any questions about these issues or any desire to become a key contact to the members of legislation in this state, reach out to Tristan Faile, tristan@vertexpt.com.
Some updates from APTA FAL, including Home Health, NIH, CMS, Stark Law, and Congress.

A final rule from the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) makes it clear that the agency will move ahead in its efforts to make hospital cost data more accessible to consumers. Beginning January 1, 2021, hospitals will be required to share a much more detailed range of charges, including gross charges, charges negotiated with a third-party payer, charges for cash payment from individuals, and minimum and maximum negotiated charges.

Yoga and physical therapy (PT) are effective approaches to treating co-occurring sleep disturbance and back pain while reducing the need for medication, according to a new study. The research showed significant improvements in sleep quality lasting 52 weeks after 12 weeks of yoga classes or 1-on-1 PT, which suggests a long-term benefit of these non-pharmacologic approaches.

If you ever look at negative company reviews on Glassdoor, you’ll see a recurring theme: “Management was awful, but my coworkers were great.” Coworkers can make or break your experience at a company, but even if you don’t immediately click with your team, there are plenty of ways to build camaraderie intentionally. Feeling connected with your coworkers has many benefits.
