Happy Holidays, Happy Kwanzaa, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Festivus, and Season’s Greetings! The SCAPTA Board of Directors would like to wish all our members the best during this time of year. This time of year is reserved for family, friends, and reflection on what has been an eventful 2019 while planning for a prosperous 2020. We would like to thank all our members for their continued support and membership. We are blessed with a tremendous membership of diverse individuals that represent so much of what our profession has to offer the people of South Carolina and beyond. As we roll into 2020, your Board of Directors is excited to continue to work on issues that impact the practice of physical therapy through the three primary pillars of our strategic plan; education, practice, and advocacy. As we move forward, we are excited about the new challenges and opportunities a new year will bring. But for now, relax, enjoy the season and thank you for being a proud supporter and member of the South Carolina Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association.
Sincerely,
Aaron Embry, PT, DPT, MSCR – President

The Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), abundant in minimally processed plant-based foods, rich in monounsaturated fat from olive oil, but lower in saturated fat, meats, and dairy products, seems an ideal nutritional model for cardiovascular health. Methodological aspects of Mediterranean intervention trials, limitations in the quality of some meta-analyses, and other issues may have raised recent controversies.

So, you want to deliver value-driven care? There are plenty of formal programs in play that are designed to foster value-driven care throughout the healthcare system (MIPS, PCMHs, and ACOs, to name a few). But even if it doesn’t make sense for your practice to participate in these programs—or you’re not eligible to do so—you can still foster a culture of value-driven care in your own organization.

Today, disabilities are looked at as a form of diversity. According to the World Bank, over one billion people, which is about 15% of the globe’s population – have some form of disability. Disabilities are not the same across the board for all patients, which makes finding the best ways to manage and treat them essential. Patients may be able to handle some aspects of their diagnosis on their own, but in order to receive the best care, involving others is often necessary.

She's a physical therapist (PT) who might be lucky to get 20 minutes with her patients, tops. And sometimes, there are lights and cameras to contend with. At other times, she has to be aware of the fact that if she uses taping, it must not be visible to the literally millions of people all over the world who will be watching her patient. That's just how showbiz works.

Compliance can be a scary word.
Compliance for health care means following rules and regulations in order to be compliant with Medicare, HIPAA, and the Office of the Inspector General. For patients, compliance means following their home exercise program (HEP) and being diligent in order to get better. From the perspective of a private practice physical therapy owner, being compliant means not just taking care of business, but taking care of yourself as well.

As of 2005, per the Medicare Benefit Policy Manual (Publication 100-02), Medicare beneficiaries may seek physical therapy services without seeing a physician or obtaining a referral—as long as your state practice act allows for that. Sounds pretty straightforward, right? Well, we know it wouldn’t be Medicare if it was truly that straightforward.

There's no doubt about it: the new payment system that the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) put in place in October for skilled nursing facilities (SNFs), and the system that will start up for home health agencies (HHAs) on January 1, 2020, represent major changes by Medicare. And like most major changes, the new approaches have sparked myths, misunderstandings, and inaccurate interpretations—sometimes at the expense of physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs) who work in the SNF and HHA settings and their patients.

Shoulder impingement syndrome (SIS) is the most common form of shoulder pain and a persistent musculoskeletal problem. Conservative and invasive treatments, aimed at the shoulder joint, have had limited success. Research suggests shoulder function is related to thoracic posture, but it is unknown whether thoracic posture is associated with SIS.

CMS recently came down with its final ruling on the Physician Fee Schedule, which is going to cut Medicare reimbursements for physical therapy services by 8% in 2021. I know a lot of practices out there that are running on such thin profit margins that an 8% reduction in Medicare reimbursements for physical therapy services could be the nail in the coffin. But it doesn’t have to be that way!
