Zelboraf skin cancer medication launches in UK

Malignant melanoma cases are on the rise in the U.K., with about 10,000 individuals diagnosed each year. This specific type of cancer claims 2,300 deaths annually and disproportionately affects young people. The European Commission has licensed a new life-extending drug for adults with advanced inoperable melanoma or whose cancer has spread. Vemurafenib is now available in the U.K. by Roche under the name of Zelboraf as the first personalized treatment that demonstrated to increase patients' survival time with a specific BRAF gene mutation. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has released new requirements for sunscreens that will go into effect by this summer, but consumers should already be looking for new labels. Until now, sunscreen rules have mainly focused on preventing sunburns, which are caused by ultraviolet B radiation from the sun. Women who use tanning salons have a somewhat increased risk of skin cancer, according to a study that adds to evidence that baking in a tanning bed can be as bad as baking under the sun. The study, by a team at Harvard Medical School, looked at data from nearly 730,000 nurses followed for 20 years and found that women who used tanning beds in their youth were more likely than others to develop skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma in particular. Study: New gel treats precancerous skin condition in days

A newly approved gel appears effective in treating a condition called actinic keratosis, which is a common precursor to squamous cell skin cancer, a new study finds. Earlier topical treatments took weeks or even months to treat the condition, but the new product — Picato gel — can work in a matter of days, according to the report in the March 15 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. In the early 1980s, combining facelift procedures with chemical skin peeling was considered a no-no because of skin necrosis concerns. But Dr. David M.
