Cancer-gene data sharing boosted
When the U.S. diagnostics giant Myriad Genetics had its legal monopoly on breast-cancer gene testing eliminated one year ago, the company still retained an enormous edge over competitors. A year after the Supreme Court invalidated the patenting of genes, the number of entries for BRCA variants in ClinVar, a public database for clinical genetic data, has grown to around one-third of the number in the Myriad database.

Utilizing genetic health care professional reduces unnecessary testing, study shows
Medical Xpress
A study published June 12 in Genetics in Medicine shows that counseling from a genetic health care provider before genetic testing educates patients and may help reduce unnecessary procedures. Researchers surveyed 473 patients who had genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations. Among study participants who saw a board-certified geneticist or genetic counselor, almost all recalled having a pre-test discussion, compared to only 59 percent of those who did not. These findings suggest large differences in quality of care across providers who order testing.

FDA says more decisions on morcellation coming
Outpatient Surgery
Will morcellation devices used to laparoscopically remove uterine fibroids be recalled or banned? The FDA is convening a meeting next month to take up the topic. The agency issued an advisory in April, discouraging their use because the devices can spread cancerous tissue in women with undetected uterine sarcomas, a condition the agency says may affect as many as 1 in every 350 women. However, proponents of morcellation say the proportion of women with undetected sarcomas is likely closer to 1 in 1,000; that the prognosis is already bleak for those women; and that for everyone else, the alternatives are typically much more dangerous and invasive.

Can weight-loss surgery lower cancer risk for the obese?
HealthDay News
Weight-loss surgery may do more than lower the risk of heart problems and improve Type 2 diabetes in obese patients: A new review suggests it may also lower their chances of a cancer diagnosis. Cancer experts in the United States who reviewed the findings were not completely convinced that surgery can reduce cancer risk to that of normal-weight people. But they agreed that obesity raises the risk of certain cancers.

ACS predicts that cancer survivors will number nearly 19 million by 2024
Oncology Nurse Advisor
The number of cancer survivors in the United States, currently estimated to be 14.5 million, will grow to almost 19 million by 2024, according to an updated report by the American Cancer Society (ACS). Even though cancer incidence rates have been decreasing for 10 years, the number of cancer survivors is growing, according to the second edition of Cancer Treatment & Survivorship Facts & Figures, 2014-2015 and an accompanying journal article published in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians. This is the result of increases in cancer diagnoses driven by the aging and growth of the population, as well as the fact that people are living longer with cancer because of earlier cancer detection and more effective treatments.
