This editorial was published by several members of Syracuse University's Department of Nutrition and Food Services, including SNEB members Lynn Brann, Tanya Horacek, and president Jennifer Wilkins. In it, they write, "The COVID-19 pandemic lays bare the contradictions of the modern food system... .Workers in the food system are precarious, lack adequate pay and health benefits, and yet are asked to take risks to ensure food is available so we all can eat."
SNEB leadership and staff hope you and your loved ones are healthy and safe. We are prepared to adapt Annual Conference plans, policies and published deadlines as needed while adhering to all health, safety, and travel guidelines.
In the unfortunate circumstance that a cancellation is necessary, SNEB will automatically refund 100% of registration fees within 30 days of when that decision is made. Regardless, all accepted abstracts will be published in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior.
We are moving forward with realistic optimism that we will be able to gather in person this July 18-21 in San Diego.

This presentation will describe the process of conducting a qualitative research study and highlight results from a study that explored the perceived barriers to healthy eating among those experiencing food insecurity and relying on food pantries as supplemental food sources. Overall, the study participants greatly desired to consume healthy foods; however, they felt limited by a lack of nutrition or cooking knowledge, adequate resources, special dietary needs, and culture and family influences. The discussion of these research findings will inform attendees of some essential elements for the development of future nutrition education programs and for promoting health in low-income communities.

The JNEB editorial staff has put together a special collection featuring research articles conducted on Australian populations or by Australia-based authors, but have practical applications to nutrition professionals around the world. It's available free through February 2021.
This collection does not reflect all the authors from Australia who have published with JNEB, but rather a brief introduction to the significant work coming to us from Australia. There are also podcasts if you'd rather hear about the studies than read.
JNEB is working on a special theme issue on sustainability and editors have put out a call for all journal article types focused on reductions in food loss and waste that involve behavioral changes. If you have such an article, the deadline for submission is September 15. You can learn more about the issue and how to submit on
the Journal website.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced last week approval of the District of Columbia (DC), North Carolina, and West Virginia's requests to provide online purchasing of food to SNAP households. This approval will allow the states and Federal District to expedite the implementation of online purchasing with currently authorized SNAP online retailers with a target start date to be announced in the future.
The online pilot is already operational in Alabama, Iowa, Nebraska, New York, Oregon, and Washington State. Arizona, California, Florida, and Idaho are also in the process of starting their programs.
