The App Quality Evaluation Tool (AQEL) allows nutrition professionals to quantitatively evaluate apps. This evaluation is helpful when deciding which apps might be most appropriate for your clients or program audiences. This validated tool provides a method of scoring apps based on the following areas:
- Behavior Change Potential
- Support of Knowledge Acquisition
- Skill Development
- Function
- App Purpose
In addition to these 5 scores, 2 additional scores are calculated based on the nutrition needs and age of the target audience. This means you decide if you are evaluating the app for use by children, teens and/or adults.

A food pantry’s primary objective is to get food to the participants that need it—to meet their immediate needs. Annually, food pantries, or food banks, distribute free grocery items to over 46.5 million people in the United States. Researchers and Extension educators at the University of Illinois are asking if improvements to the consumer nutrition environment of food pantries—placement of items, food choices, freshness, availability of nutritional information, etc.—can also help participants in making healthier food choices.

Consumers today want an increasing amount of information about the products they purchase, use, and consume. They seek more transparency as a condition for trusting brands. A recent study demonstrated that today’s consumer is going way beyond the traditional value drivers of Price, Performance and Convenience in the way they value and purchase brands. Emerging drivers around health and social responsibility are wrapped in consumer expectations of transparency. The study by Deloitte was commissioned by the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) and the Food Marketing Institute (FMI). It is no longer sufficient to simply list an ingredient. Consumers want to know what that ingredient is, where it came from and why it is in the product they are considering. Download Whitepaper.
