It's hot! It's cold! Many of us use the weather as a reason to be inactive. Most of us sit too much and that includes staff as well as program participants. Here are some resources (apps, online PDFs) to give you ideas for activities to do at home or at the office. Also included are many app or desktop reminders to get up and move.

Speakers:
Nancy Rodriguez, PhD, RD, CSSD, FACSM, University of Connecticut

Emerging research has demonstrated the benefits of eating higher protein diets (within the context of the Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range), particularly related to sports nutrition, weight management and healthy aging. Evolving science is also beginning to examine the effects of protein quality and timing to help further refine practical recommendations to optimize consumption. Webinar sponsored by the National Dairy Council.
Making VR a Reality: Virtual Reality in Nutrition Education
11 a.m. EDT Sept. 8
Register
Virtual reality isn't just for entertainment. Educators are finding novel ways to incorporate virtual reality and 360° spherical videos into the classroom, and nutrition educators are in a prime position to develop engaging learning tools with this technology. This webinar, co-led by a media specialist, instructional designer, and nutrition faculty member, will introduce participants to the concept of virtual reality, including important technological and educational considerations. Using nutrition educator training videos as an example, the speakers will demonstrate the technology and provide tips for nutrition educators seeking to incorporate this technology in their nutrition education courses. This session is sponsored by the Higher Education Division.

While many school cafeterias nationwide are increasingly offering more nutritious fare, 40 percent of children still take their own lunch to school, according to the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior. Parents also like the option of knowing exactly what their child is eating, whether it be because of food allergies or other dietary restrictions.

With the recently expanded scope of Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior (JNEB), we are planning a special issue devoted to nutrition economics. Dr. Joanne Guthrie will author the opening Perspective, and we are hoping for many excellent articles to progress through our peer review.
Topics include but are not limited to behavioral economics, consumer food behavior as it relates to economics, cost benefits of programs, food budgeting and related areas, or how economic status of individuals or communities affects food access or intake.
To be considered for this special issue, manuscripts should be submitted through JNEB's submission system by Oct. 15. Questions should be directed to Editor-in-Chief Dr. Karen Chapman-Novakofski at editor@jneb.org.

This is the eighth semester that JNEB is holding a Journal Club. In a step to strengthen its oversight of food ingredients, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a final rule detailing the criteria for concluding that the use of a substance in human or animal food is "generally recognized as safe." Unlike food additives, GRAS substances are not subject to FDA premarket approval; however, they must meet the same safety standards as approved food additives.

The baby boomer generation is beginning to reach retirement age, and healthcare costs increase as more elderly individuals are affected by chronic health conditions and disease. Elderly adults often experience loss of appetite, resulting in weight loss and undernutrition. Now, researchers suggest this may be due to increased production of a hormone called peptide YY, which tells humans when they are feeling full. The findings were published recently in the journal Appetite.
