Mary Murimi, PhD, RD President
Dear SNEB members, in an effort to reduce the gap between SNEB members and their leaders and understanding that approximately half of our members were not able to attend either the annual conference or the business meeting in San Diego where the new and continuing Board of Directors were introduced, I want to take this opportunity to introduce to you to your 2016-2017 Board of Directors. SNEB is indeed fortunate to have a group of passionate, dedicated and talented volunteers serving on this year's Board of Directors. Take a moment to become better acquainted with them and the areas of the Society where they will be connecting. The second purpose of this introduction is to enhance communication. I encourage you to read their profiles and communicate with them as needed. The Board of Directors meet every other month and at that time we can address your ideas, concerns and suggestions in a timely manner. Let us stay connected. Read their profiles.

Making VR a Reality: Virtual Reality in Nutrition Education
11 a.m. EDT Thursday, Sept. 8
Register
Virtual reality isn't just for entertainment. Educators are finding novel ways to incorporate virtual reality and 360° spherical videos into the classroom, and nutrition educators are in a prime position to develop engaging learning tools with this technology. This webinar, co-led by a media specialist, instructional designer, and nutrition faculty member, will introduce participants to the concept of virtual reality, including important technological and educational considerations. Using nutrition educator training videos as an example, the speakers will demonstrate the technology and provide tips for nutrition educators seeking to incorporate this technology in their nutrition education courses. This session is sponsored by the Higher Education Division.
SNEB Journal Club 1: Dietary Self-Monitoring, But Not Dietary Quality, Improves With Use of Smartphone App Technology
Noon EDT Monday, Sept. 12
Register
Speaker: Christopher M. Wharton, PhD, Arizona State University
Webinar based on this Journal article
Dietary self-monitoring is linked to improved weight loss success. Mobile technologies, such as smartphone applications (apps), might allow for improved dietary tracking adherence. The authors assessed the use of a popular smartphone app for dietary self-monitoring and weight loss by comparing it with traditional diet counseling and entry methods.
SNEB Journal Club 2: University Students Intend to Eat Better
Noon EDT Monday, Sept. 19
Register now
Speaker: Paula DN Dworatzek, PhD RD, and June Matthews, PhD, Western University
Webinar based on this Journal article
Students do not have adequate knowledge of age- and sex-specific food guide recommendations. Simpler food guide recommendations or age- and sex-targeted campaigns may enhance knowledge. Students intend to consume more vegetables and less HCFB; however, they have low coping self-efficacy, all of which could be targeted in nutrition interventions.
Tisch Food Center
These questions formed the basis of the Dialogue Now session the Tisch Food Center hosted at this year's SNEB conference. Over 30 people came together to brainstorm the benefits and challenges of the term. In small groups we then started to think about concise, compelling tag lines to communicate the value of nutrition education to the broader public. This was the first step in what we hope will be an ongoing dialogue about how to communicate what we mean by nutrition education so people understand the life-changing work we do.

The percentage of overweight kids is growing at an overwhelming rate, with one out of three children now considered overweight or obese. According to LiveWell Colorado, Colorado kids get at least 30 percent of their daily calories from the lunches they eat at school. According to a new study published in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior, lunches packed at home are generally not as nutritious as school lunches.

SNEB
As part of SNEB's strategic plan, our extensive engagement in national issues and the increase and growth of the journal, we are continuing to solicit topics for position papers.
Position papers provide a comprehensive discussion of SNEB's policy on one or more topics. Containing extensive background information and analysis, the position paper provides a more complete understanding of the issues and rationale for the positions(s) set forth by the organization.
The current position paper being written concerns sustainability. Members are invited to send nominations for position paper topics relevant to SNEB, other than sustainability.
To have a position paper topic considered for next year, send your topic and a brief rationale to the position paper co-chairs, Marilyn Briggs, PhD, RD (mmbriggs@ucdavis.edu) and JNEB's Editor-in-Chief, Karen Chapman- Novakofski, PhD, RDN (kmc@illinois.edu) by Oct. 1.
The position paper committee will review each submitted topic and rationale and decide on topics that will be forwarded to the SNEB Board of Directors (BOD) for vote. Once topics are approved by the BOD, authors and reviewers will be invited. SNEB position papers will be peer reviewed and published in JNEB.

Food choices are primarily dictated by taste, cost, convenience and nutritional value. These attitudes toward food also influence diet quality or the overall healthfulness of a diet. For example, perceived value of cost over nutrition has been shown to associate with lower quality diets and higher consumption of fats, added sugars and sodium.

While undertaking her doctoral research, in Nairobi, Kenya, Dr. Jan Low, M.S. This realization, and her subsequent work for the International Potato Center on the orange-fleshed sweet potato led her to recently be named a 2016 World Food Prize co-laureate.

For decades, the common dogma of energy balance stated that weight gain or loss is a simple matter of "calories in and calories out." On the second day of YWM2016, Steve Blair called for a rethinking of "nonsense presented repeatedly without any data to back it up." At the top of his list for such nonsense, he placed claims that "increased food intake alone explains the increase in body weight in the United States."
