SNEB
We are seeking to form a new SNEB Division! The Research Division will provide our members with new opportunities to share, learn, and build capacity on research topics and methodologies.
During the recent JNEB retreat, a suggestion was made to initiate the formation of a Research Division for SNEB. In attendance at the meeting were Adrienne White (SNEB President), Karen Chapman-Novakofski
(JNEB Editor-in-Chief), Laura Bellows (JNEB Journal Committee Chair), JNEB Associate Editors – Susan Johnson, Bret Luick, Julie Reeder, Madeleine Sigman-Grant and Chris Taylor along with Rachel Daeger (SNEB Executive Director). All concurred with this suggestion.
Madeleine Sigman-Grant and Laura Bellows have agreed to serve as the lead co-chairs for this Division until members can select their representatives.
To comply with SNEB protocols for formation of a new Division, we are notifying members via email. This completed form states the name, objectives, and justification for this action. In order for the request to be forwarded to the SNEB Board of Directors for final approval, 50 signatures are needed.
If you are in agreement with the creation of this new SNEB Research Division, please complete the Survey Monkey questionnaire.

A conversation about nutrition and health education signage and resource. Over time, our customers have moved from straight-forward nutrition education to a PSE approach. We support the thoughtfulness and planning that seems to come from PSE, but wonder if our products, marketing, and outreach need to change so that customers can more easily see how our resources now fit with their plans and initiatives. All welcome — no cost to attend.

Right before the annual conference, SNEB Past President Deb Palmer-Keenan contacted the office about a box of photos she had that needed to be scanned. Time to work on the project never materialized so she passed the box along. Very few of the 300 prints and slides were identified. We've posted the images on a private webpage which you can join and comment. Any help in determining where these pictures fit in SNEB's history is much appreciated. To view the photos, join Cluster. If you have any details on an image, leave a comment on the photo to let us know!

Bringing Produce to the People: Implementing a Social Marketing Food Access Intervention in Rural Food Deserts
Webinar based on this JNEB article
This study describes and evaluates the process of implementing a social marketing food access intervention for food desert communities in rural California. A case study approach used mixed-methods data from nationwide market comparisons, environmental assessment, and community informants. Lessons learned demonstrate room for improvement in implementing such strategies and underscore the importance of involving community in decision making; the strategic importance of operational decisions relating to intervention design, site and product selection, and distribution models; and the need to reconsider the problem of access in rural areas.
Learning Objectives
- Describe the social marketing principles for the design and implementation of food access interventions.
- Describe a mixed method case study approach used to evaluate the process of implementation of a social marketing intervention.
- Identify challenges and opportunities to improve sustainability and success of food access interventions in rural settings.

The web presents an ever growing opportunity to provide cost-effective and cost-efficient SM nutrition education to a broad audience — but how do you ensure that information reaches your intended audience? This webinar will cover geo-fencing — the practice of restricting online content to particular geographic regions — using specific examples on Facebook and Google's advertising platforms to target SNAP-Ed eligible audiences.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this webinar, participants will gain understanding on:
- How University of Georgia SNAP-Ed SM uses geo-targeting options for promoted content on Facebook and Google AdWords.
- How geo-fencing helps to achieve 100 percent SNAP-Ed eligibility in geo-targeted online audiences.
- The basic knowledge to apply similar practices to other nutrition education program targeted to low-income audiences.
SNEB Journal Club 8: Development, Implementation, and Evaluation of Evidence-Based Cooking Videos for Cancer Survivors
Monday, Nov. 20 | Noon - 1 p.m. EDT | Register
Speakers: Colleen Spees, PhD, MEd, RDN, FAND and Emily Fitz, RDN, The Ohio State University
Webinar based on this JNEB article
There are over 15.5 million cancer survivors currently living in the U.S., with many at risk for multiple obesity-related comorbidities associated with inadequate dietary and physical activity patterns. Evidence-based guidelines for cancer prevention and survivorship promote a primarily plant-based diet to improve survivor outcomes, yet adherence to these recommendations is poor. Nutrition programming targeting the specific needs of cancer survivors should provide basic nutrition knowledge and promote adherence to the evidence-based guidelines.
Learning Objectives:
- Access resources to support and identify evidence-based cancer prevention and survivorship recommendations.
- Understand the impact of collaborating with experts to enhance program development, implementation, and evaluation.
- Recognize and document clients' perceptions and impressions of remote education and training.
SNEB Journal Club 9: Effectiveness of a Parent Health Report in Increasing Fruit and Vegetable Consumption

Speaker: Sanita L. Hunsaker, PhD, Brigham Young University
Effectiveness of a Parent Health Report in Increasing Fruit and Vegetable Consumption Among Preschoolers and Kindergarteners
Webinar based on this JNEB article
Results from both an open trial and a randomized controlled trial suggested that the parent health report may be a beneficial tool to increase vegetable consumption in preschoolers and kindergarteners. Increases in vegetable consumption can lead to the establishment of lifelong habits of healthy vegetable intake and decrease risk for chronic diseases.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the benefits of fruit and vegetable consumption in preschoolers and kindergarteners
- Describe factors that contribute to increased fruit and vegetable intake
- Demonstrate the utility of a parent health report to increasing preschooler and kindergartener vegetable intake

It's the time of year for food donation solicitations. Although we are reminded that cash donations help organizations get more "bang for their buck" meeting recipient needs, food donations are also appreciated. This article reminds us that donations include healthy food choices (many receiving foods are pre-diabetic or have diabetes or high blood pressure).
