Researchers develop new method for recycling high-density polyethylene into biodegradable material

A fresh technique for recycling high-density polyethylene has been created by researchers. Argonne National Laboratory and Cornell University scientists used a novel catalytic approach to convert post-consumer HDPE plastic together into a fully recyclable and possibly biodegradable material that had the same thermal and mechanical properties as the starting single-use plastic.

Research identifies enzymes to break down PET

Recently published research in Nature Communications describes the identification of identify enzymes for breaking down PET, with potential application to chemical recycling. The researchers used the sequences of proteins known to hydrolyze PET to construct a model. The model was applied to genome databases to identify additional stable enzymes capable of hydrolyzing PET near its glass transition temperature.

EFSA determines plastic produced by poly recycling is food safe
Food Safety Magazine
The European Food Safety Authority has determined the food safety of plastic polyethylene terephthalate when produced by a recycling process called Poly Recycling for use in food contact materials. Poly Recycling involves the input of washed and dried PET flakes originating from collected post-consumer PET containers, including no more than 5% PET from non-food consumer applications.
