Plastics Hall of Fame is part of UMass Lowell's push to raise plastic's profile
The Telegraph    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
VideoBrief Bob Malloy knows more about plastic than most people ever will, but he admits that plastic has an image problem even among the people who make it. "Nobody knows what a plastics engineer is; they don't even know it exists," said Malloy, chairman of the nation's oldest university department devoted to plastic engineering, at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. "They know chemical engineers, mechanical engineers, but plastic — no." More

Ultrafine rubber particles raise thermoplastic's glass transition temperature
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Increasing the toughness of a plastic by blending it with another polymer generally causes a decrease in heat resistance, an effect that can be disadvantageous. The glass transition temperatures of the two polymers will typically move toward each other or at best, depending on polymer compatibility, maintain their original values. Adding ultrafine full-vulcanized powdered rubber substantially increases a thermoplastic's glass transition temperature, due to the restricted motion of plastic chains at the interface layer. More

Enhancing the fluorescence of a europium complex by co-doping with terbium
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Rare-earth metal complexes have gained significant attention due to their unique long-lived, line-like light emission at a variety of wavelengths. These cover the spectral range from the near-UV through the visible and into the near-IR region. The pure complexes, however, have poor physical and mechanical properties. For practical application of their fluorescence, polymeric host materials doped with complex molecules offer better thermal and mechanical properties and easier processing than the complexes alone. Manipulatable surfaces produced using polymer blends
Basque Research via AZoM    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Using new combinations of well-known polymers is one way of producing new materials. For this work, the use of polymers that respond to external stimuli are of particular interest, and that is the line followed by the chemist Leire Ruiz-Rubio in the research for her doctorate thesis. She has studied the blending of certain polymers that can be controlled when the conditions of their medium — the pH or temperature, for example — have been altered. More

Economist: You must make the new machines
MIT Technology Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The U.S. has lost millions of manufacturing jobs since 2000. Industries have moved offshore. America's trade deficit in physical goods is $738 billion a year. So what's the path forward? Countries trying to understand what's next for their export industries often call Harvard economist Ricardo Hausmann. More

Factories are firing up, except in Europe
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The slowdown in worldwide manufacturing that began in mid-2012 may be nearing an end. Surveys of manufacturing companies around the world indicated that in December nearly as many companies reported that orders were rising as said that orders were continuing to decline. The gains were concentrated in developing countries; China reported its best month in nearly two years. But much of the euro zone remained weak. France reported its worst monthly figure since early 2009, when the credit crisis was at its worst. More

Short laser pulses 'tune' gold nanoparticles
Rice University via Futurity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
At different wavelengths, pulsed laser light can individually activate different types of nanoparticles — in this case, shells, rods, and solid spheres mixed together. Plasmonic gold nanoparticles make pinpoint heating on demand possible, but a new way of using short laser pulses to selectively heat diverse nanoparticles could advance their medical and industrial use.
