Scientists recycle previously unrecyclable plastic
SciTechDaily
PVC, or polyvinyl chloride, is a widely used plastic in the U.S. and globally, ranking as the third highest by volume worldwide.
It can be found in a variety of everyday products, including hospital equipment such as tubing, blood bags, and masks, as well as plumbing pipes. PVC is also used in construction materials like window frames, housing trim, siding and flooring.

Bacteria can eat and digest plastic
Technology Networks
A new study by scientists at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research has found that bacteria can break down and digest plastic. The research is published in Marine Pollution Bulletin. The study, led by Maaike Goudriaan, a PhD student at NIOZ, focused on the bacterium Rhodococcus ruber, which is found in a variety of habitats and can tolerate stressful environments. It is also known to form a “biofilm” on plastic found in nature.

The path to pellet perfection
Plastics Technology
In underwater pelletizing of plastics, defining the “perfect” pellet is not easy. The end use of the pellet defines the key characteristics that make the perfect pellet for the process. Once the perfect pellet is defined, developing and maintaining a process that consistently produces these pellets is critical.

Innovators develop seaweed-based alternatives to plastic food wrappers
Mongabay
Seaweed, a common name for thousands of marine plants and algae found in different water bodies, not only provides food and shelter for marine animals, but it can also help solve the plastic pollution problem. Materials researchers from Flinders University in Australia and German biomaterials developer one • fıve have developed a new nonpolluting seaweed-based coating material “designed to replace conventional fossil-based plastic coatings used in grease-resistant fast food packaging.”

Now hiring: Plastics equipment operators and maintenance technicians
Plastics Today
Increased use of “smart” manufacturing machinery — connected equipment that produces reams of actionable operational data — and automation in general mean that a new generation of plastics machinery operators is desperately needed.
While in some instances manufacturers might require fewer operators to run more machines, there will always be a need for savvy, dedicated operators who can monitor multiple tasks, troubleshoot production issues, and be comfortable in the increasingly digitized world of modern manufacturing.
