The world’s reopening from coronavirus lockdowns is wrapped in plastic, most of which will never be recycled.
The virus has given a new foothold to single-use plastics previously criticized for the waste they generate. To stem transmission of Covid-19, bars are serving drinks in plastic cups, supermarkets are wrapping once loose fruits and baked goods in plastic and offices are adding plastic coverings to everything from doorknobs to elevator buttons.

Plastics News is wrapping up its biggest ranking of the year in this week's issue, counting more than 500 injection molders in North America. (Hollee Keller has a little more information on the second part of the ranking from the June 29 issue.) And our sister publication, Automotive News, also has one of its biggest rankings of the year this week, the biggest auto suppliers in the world.

In this business climate, there are many advantages to a “pay-as-you-go” business model when the focus is on outcomes. Capital expenses are transformed into operating expenses, spread over time. Paying on a usage basis puts the focus on your business results rather than equipment or transactions. HP Jet Fusion 3D Printing Solutions are reinventing design and manufacturing. From accelerating design cycles, to printing full-color functional parts, to running efficient volume production with repeatable part quality.

Last week we discussed the true cost of a mis-hire. This week we begin to look at key strategies for avoiding that and moving toward the hiring of A-players.
Believe it or not, the biggest mistake I see many companies make in hiring is not being clear on who they need. A traditional job description, no matter how well-written, does not get to the heart of who the person you need is.

Medical Plastics News
In recent years, plastic production has accelerated, with global plastic set production to reach 600 million tonnes by 2030 if production continues at its current rate of growth. Most of this plastic is not biodegradable, with 30-50% of it being produced for single-use applications. This creates a serious environmental problem when the plastics reach the end of their life cycle, and plastic waste has become an increasingly pressing issue in recent years.

Until recently it was possible to imagine the end of plastic, but COVID-19 has changed the game. Since the pandemic started, there has been a significant increase in plastic waste, such as masks, gloves and gowns, and increased purchases of products including disposable wipes and liquid soap.

Plastics Recycling Update
Across the U.S., recycling conversations among elected officials are gaining momentum, suggesting 2020 could still be marked by laws related to materials recovery.
At the outset of 2020, the year seemed primed to be one in which recycling policy would grab significant attention, even outside the industry.
Ambitious California legislative proposals, which did not advance in the 2019 session, were anticipated to return with more force during this year’s session.

Plastics Today
Back in the summer of 2019, plastic packaging—particularly single use—was taking a beating and it looked like the future was bleak. Social media and viral videos made plastics the villain, singularly responsible for polluting the planet. Some plastics professionals were even pondering if they should jump to a different career path before it all came crashing down.

Iain Rae, service manager at ULMA Packaging UK, commented: “Though the United Kingdom remains subject to restrictions around in-person visits from servicing teams, companies who can safely continue to operate are still using their packaging machinery around the clock. This in turn presents potential issues, including carrying out factory acceptance tests and site acceptance tests on newly installed machines, and providing ongoing maintenance, support and training for operators using the equipment.”

It was late March when I received an email from The New York Times requesting comment on the moves to delay plastic bag bans due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus. I was out of the office in Arizona on a trip with my dad to attend a couple of spring training baseball games when out of left field came this email. While spring training was canceled, the debate over plastics was not.

Safety standards for plastics and rubber machinery have long been the purview of national or regional groups, belying the increasingly international nature of the plastics processing industry. A company with plants in Ohio, Mexico and China could expect different safety standards for its equipment in those disparate facilities and regions.
