"Plastics in Clean Water" will provide a deep dive into how polymers are used in water filtration, water delivery and new technology surrounding this as well as engineering that can go into products ahead of time to minimize microplastics in the waterways. Presentations will include microplastics research and development along with membrane technology and the material science that allowed such developments. More Information

A week-long conversation thread on SPE’s The Chain brought up some interesting comments regarding life-cycle assessments (LCAs). It began with a question from Conor Carlin of Illig LP, who wanted to discuss the following statement: “The value of using a material with a lower environmental impact has yet to be quantified as a reliable numerical value that can be incorporated into material selection, and probably such a metric cannot be created.”

Thermoplastic expandable microspheres (TEMS), launched in the early 1980s, are spherical particles that consist of a polymer shell that encapsulates gas. They are, in a sense, micro “balloons,” and upon heating, a tremendous volume and density change takes place.

In this business climate, there are many advantages to a “pay-as-you-go” business model when the focus is on outcomes. Capital expenses are transformed into operating expenses, spread over time. Paying on a usage basis puts the focus on your business results rather than equipment or transactions. HP Jet Fusion 3D Printing Solutions are reinventing design and manufacturing. From accelerating design cycles, to printing full-color functional parts, to running efficient volume production with repeatable part quality.

Royal HaskoningDHV, DSM, and the City of Rotterdam, have announced their intent to collaborate in the design and build of a new circular composite footbridge which will be installed in Rotterdam. Rotterdam is a dynamic, innovative city at the forefront in the use of composite bridges to underpin the city’s drive towards circularity and sustainability. The footbridge is made from a fiber-reinforced Arnite thermoplastic polyester. Arnite grades include those based on polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

Resource Recycling
A paper authored by a Spanish plastics research institute says enzymes can be used to degrade adhesive layers in multi-layer scrap materials, allowing the plastics to be separated for recycling.
AIMPLAS prepared a paper for Plastics Recycling Update that describes its research under the ENZPLAST2 project, a European project exploring different uses for enzymes in plastics production, recycling and biodegradation.

Last week we discussed the first step in recruiting A-players — establishing a job scorecard. This week we move on to the next step — identifying the talent pool that most closely matches what you have laid out in the job scorecard. Before I get to the specifics of how to do this, let me talk about the effectiveness of job postings in attracting the top talent. A recent study by LinkedIn showed that 18% of all candidates are actively looking at any given time.

Buying a new or used injection molding machine is always an experience. Often there is a time crunch to get it ordered and delivered. A non-repairable breakdown, unexpected new business, a new rush job for your best client, and other circumstances can make for near panic to get a new or used machine installed and running as soon as possible.

Tru-Immune by Ethos Laboratories is reportedly the first surrogate Viral Neutralisation Test (sVNT) to evaluate Covid-19 protective immunity in the United States. Unlike other tests currently on the market, Tru-Immune detects the presence and magnitude of neutralising antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 virus that could prevent future infection.

As COVID-19 continues to spread — more slowly in some places than others — it's probably not a surprise to hear of more changes coming to trade shows and conferences still on the schedule for 2020.
On July 2, organizers of Plastimagen, Mexico's largest trade show, said they would move the event to January, from its original dates in November.

I like to keep a positive attitude, but 2020 is trying my patience. But I'll say one good thing about the year so far: People seem to be more open about sharing their opinions.
I know what you're thinking. And yes, sometimes it gets to be too much. We've all seen lots of unfriending on Facebook and endless fights on Twitter. Some folks even take a complete break from social media to get away from the constant stream of other people's opinions.

The coronavirus pandemic has exerted an unprecedented stress test on nearly every aspect of the U.S. economy, including plastics manufacturing. In the earliest days, machines idled from normal business paused by the outbreak, were rapidly repurposed for making whatever products could help right now, whether it was personal protective equipment (PPE) for frontline medical personnel or valves for much-needed hospital ventilators.

“Man cannot live on reels alone.” Those words, spoken by Thomas Walker, president of Pittsfield Plastics Engineering, LLC (PPE), explains the captive spool and reel molder’s many initiatives over the last few years to bolster the custom side of its business. The most recent of these efforts includes the addition of a 1204-ton injection machine with a shot capacity of 155.6 oz from Absolute Haitian. (see Processor’s Edge, March 2020).
