This additional space will increase the company’s worldwide square footage by more than 53% to 356,000 square feet.
The new Franklin, MA building at 16 Forge Park will require minimal renovation, and the company’s Quick Wire and Tubing business, which provides in-stock and custom-finished metal wire and hypotubing, will gain its own dedicated space as it becomes the building’s first occupant later this year.

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a demand for billions and billions of face masks, and one of the best filtering materials for such masks is a labyrinth of tiny fibers made by the “melt-blown” process. The face-mask market is wide open right now, but extrusion processors must evaluate all of the unique aspects of polymer melting and pressurization baked into this process before jumping in.

In this business climate, there are many advantages to a “pay-as-you-go” business model when the focus is on outcomes. Capital expenses are transformed into operating expenses, spread over time. Paying on a usage basis puts the focus on your business results rather than equipment or transactions. HP Jet Fusion 3D Printing Solutions are reinventing design and manufacturing. From accelerating design cycles, to printing full-color functional parts, to running efficient volume production with repeatable part quality.

Getting to sustainable plastics will be a story of cooperation. Cooperation between four groups of stakeholders that are used to working together but have different goals and incentives: plastic resin producers such as SABIC; companies that turn the resin into bottles, containers and other plastic products; consumer brands such as Tupperware; and waste collection organizations.

Prices of four of the five major commodity resins were in various stages of an upward trajectory going into the third quarter. PET was the exception, with tabs mostly flat due to high domestic production and continued imports. Driving higher prices for the other resins were increased domestic demand (particularly for PE) and stronger export activity as North American suppliers regained their feedstock advantage once crude-oil prices jumped up to $40/bbl.

Magnetically separating waste particles makes it possible to reclaim a variety of raw materials from waste. Using a magnetic fluid, a waste flow can be separated into multiple segments in a single step. Researchers from Utrecht and Nijmegen have now succeeded in creating a magnetic fluid that remains stable in extremely strong magnetic fields, which makes it possible to separate materials with a high density, such as electronic components.

4-D printing takes 3-D printing a step further to create objects that can move or reconfigure themselves on demand once fabricated. While it is still in its nascent stages, researchers at Rice University recently created a new material and process that paves the way for better control of the shape they take.
The team of engineers developed a polymer ink and a corresponding printing method for fabricating objects that can be manipulated to take on new forms when exposed to changes in temperature, electric current, or stress.

Picture a tooling apprentice. Young guy, maybe just out of high school, right? Someone who was never interested in traditional college-bound classes?
How about someone in their 40s. Maybe someone with years of experience in manufacturing who wants to focus on a trade. Someone who's not from a hotbed of mold making.

We hear it all the time from successful companies: "Our employees are our most important asset." It's a familiar saying, and it's true. The fact is, humans are the ultimate versatile tools in a manufacturing plant.
That may sound a little impersonal, but we mean it in a good way. When the pandemic first started to impact plastics processors in March, the key to companies being able to quickly pivot to making personal protective equipment, ventilator components and COVID-19 testing equipment was having the right people.

This is the final part of our discussion on how to find and attract only the best talent available to your company. We started with why that is important, developing a job scorecard, identifying your target talent pool, and how to present the opportunity to those potential candidates.
You probably have heard about the “war for talent” many times. I am not a big fan of that phrase because it is not very accurate.

While straws and water bottles may get more attention, environmental groups cite "ghost gear" — abandoned or lost fishing gear such as nets, buoys and ropes — as a major cause of plastic marine debris.
As Steve Toloken writes, the U.S. has signed on to a program aimed at reducing the presence of this derelict gear in waterways.

In the plastic injection moulding industry, we work with materials that are by-products of oil refinement and moulds made of metal casting, so our terminology is bound to be at least slightly confusing.
Three terms that often get mixed up are weld, meld, and knit lines. Meld and knit lines are actually both different types of weld lines. Let’s review what causes meld and knit line imperfections, how they affect part durability, and what the difference between them is.
