Development of novel melt-spun nanocomposite fibers
SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Polymer nanocomposites are derived by incorporating nanoparticles into a bulk polymer. The resulting composite materials often have exceptional physical properties compared to the bulk material alone. Recent interest for novel properties in functional textiles has spurred research dedicated to the conversion of polymer nanocomposite systems into fibers using the efficient and versatile melt-spinning process. Nanofiber formation in and morphology development
of immiscible polymer blends

SPE Plastics Research Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Polymer composites exhibit many properties not observed in miscible polymer blends, such as anisotropic stiffness. In composites, one thermoplastic polymer can exist in another in the form of spheres, ellipsoids, fibrils and lamella as a dispersed phase. This arrangement is affected by viscoelasticity, blend ratio and processing conditions. Nanofiber formation in fibrillar blends (those which possess a fibrillar dispersed phase in the immiscible blend) is relevant to producing polymer composites with improved mechanical properties, but is not understood for all industrially relevant composites. Popart project will preserve plastic for posterity
Plastics & Rubber Weekly    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A science team at University College London is playing an important part in a European Union research project: "Preservation of Plastic Artefacts in Museum Collections" (acronym "Popart"). The work is addressing problems with a large and interesting group of synthetic materials in collections of "modern" objects from the 19th and 20th centuries. Popart is tackling the identification, characterisation, deterioration and stabilisation of plastics that are less stable than was once believed. More

Study: Ideal carbon capture solution years off
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A dream climate change cure to turn planet-warming greenhouse gases into useful products from jet fuel to plastics will take years to develop from the lab and pilot projects, a recent report found. Pilot projects already use carbon dioxide to feed plants, for example to boost tomatoes in glasshouses, while laboratories have tested the manufacture of concrete, plastics and oils, but costs are high and projects depend on concentrated streams of CO2.
