Bioplastics companies struggle to meet demand
Plastics Today
As bioplastic materials transition from being a "nice-to-have" to materials with a strong and viable business case, manufacturers are racing to keep up with demand.
Striving to hit their decarbonization targets by taking the initiative to transition to bioplastics, brand owners are generating a stronger pull than ever before.

What are you risking with outdated controls?
Plastics Technology
Programmable Logic Controllers are plant-floor computers that go back to the 1970s, when they ushered in a new area in industrial automation, now known as Industry 3.0. Initially, PLCs were a replacement for relay panels used for machine control. Over the years, they have evolved to include advanced programming functions that allows the engineering designer to create solutions for every type of complex machine process encountered in manufacturing today.

Creating more environmentally friendly, heat resistant and transparent plastics
Phys.org
Researchers in Japan have developed a new technique for creating polymers. This discovery is expected to lead to the development of plastics that are more environmentally friendly, heat resistant, and transparent.
Previous research, such as that performed by Nobel laureate Giulio Natta's group in the 1960s, created polymers using a technique called asymmetric cationic polymerization.

Resin price report: Spot resin market experiences swift, steep readjustment
Plastics Today
The dismal demand and ample supply that characterized the commodity resin markets the last week of July spilled over into the first week of August, reports the PlasticsExchange in its Market Update. Spot prices for both prime and off-grade resins continued to crumble, and the continued flow of aggressively priced offers kept most processors pinned to the sidelines. The lack of buying did not deter producers from pelting the marketplace with resin — they seem determined to find a level that will spur demand.

Recycling of plastic waste used to make low-cost fuel cells
AZO Nano
In an article recently published in the journal iScience, researchers discussed the utility of nickel-iron nanoparticles encased in waste plastic-derived carbon nanotubes for low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells.
As long as fuel inputs are available, solid oxide fuel cells, which are electrochemical energy conversion systems, can continually create electricity.

How to avoid costly mistakes in injection molding
Plastics Today
To cut costs associated with injection molding, prioritizing part moldability during the design phase is critical. Optimizing moldability from the outset can saves thousands of dollars.
Wall thickness is the foremost consideration in designing for moldability, according to one process expert, followed closely by optimizing ejection from the mold.

Engineering enzymes to help solve the planet's plastic problem
University of Manchester via ScienceDaily
Researchers from the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology have developed a new enzyme engineering platform to improve plastic degrading enzymes through directed evolution.
To illustrate the utility of their platform, they have engineered an enzyme that can successfully degrade poly(ethylene) terephthalate, the plastic commonly used in plastic bottles.
