Resin price report: Spot prices drop as producers struggle to move inventory
Plastics Today
Producers remain under pressure as resin storage costs rise, empty railcars are hard to find, and new capacity is poised to come online.
The dog days of summer are living up to their name in the commodity resin trading market, at least for sellers. Resin prices continued their downward trek the week of Aug. 15, after taking a short-lived sabbatical just a week earlier.

Expanding the frontiers of plastic recycling with new method
AZO CleanTech
The plastic waste that is released into the environment has garnered a lot of attention due to ocean trash and overcrowded landfills. Communities all across the world are exerting a great deal of effort to reduce, reuse, and recycle as a result. But what exactly does the term “recyclable” mean?

Plastic scrap could prove to be a powerful catalyst
Recycling International
The U.S. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has found a new way to tackle non-degradable polyolefin plastic scrap. It proposes a hydrogenolysis method to upcycle the polymers into selective catalysts.
The new method efficiently converts polypropylene and polyethylene into valuable commodity chemicals while reducing the need for the precious metal ruthenium.

Recycled plastics boost properties of carbon fiber
Plastic Star
The second most abundant biopolymer on Earth, lignin has understandably captured the interest of researchers over the years as a potential renewable component of polymers. The most recent innovation comes from Washington University in St. Louis, where lignin-related research may lead to even stronger, lighter carbon fiber as well as plastics with a smaller environmental footprint.

Print, recycle, repeat: Scientists demonstrate a biodegradable printed circuit
AAAS via EurekAlert!
According to the United Nations, less than a quarter of all U.S. electronic waste gets recycled. In 2021 alone, global e-waste surged at 57.5 million tons, and only 17.4% of that was recycled.
Some experts predict that our e-waste problem will only get worse over time, because most electronics on the market today are designed for portability, not recyclability.

Factors to consider for extrusion line for plastic processing
Hydrogen Fuel News
An extrusion line is used to make plastic products by melting and mixing the polymer resins that are available in a range of colors, thicknesses and types. They can melt the plastic resins and mix them to create a product that can be molded or formed into a variety of shapes and sizes. Depending on your production needs, you may need a specific type of extruder or you may require a combination of several types.

Talent talk: We need to talk about Generation Z
Plastics Today
If you are recruiting employees in the plastics industry, you will be hiring Gen-Zers. We had better learn to understand them.
Dale Carnegie once said, “Any fool can criticize, complain, and condemn — and most fools do.” This explains why I haven’t written anything about Generation Z, until now. You see, I’m a baby boomer and I confess that at times I’ve been tempted to paint an entire generation with a broad brush, and not in a good way.

Polyfil, a Kafrit Group company, together with Kafrit IL and N3Cure (an Israeli based Start Up) provides solutions for UV curing systems and CROSSITOL® masterbatches. Crosslinking enables the production of recyclable packaging with a single-polymer structure (Mono-material), saving costs and reducing the consumption of fossil-based polymers. As a result, it will have a smaller effect on the environment than most plastic solutions.
CROSSITOL® masterbatches can be used in a wide range of applications including cast and blown film extrusion. Its technology is coupled with N3Cure’s curing system to target specific layers for crosslinking, downgauging, and production costs.
