New way found to turn number seven plastic into valuable products
Washington State University via ScienceDaily
A method to convert a commonly thrown-away plastic to a resin used in 3D-printing could allow for making better use of plastic waste.
A team of Washington State University researchers developed a simple and efficient way to convert polylactic acid, a bio-based plastic used in products such as filament, plastic silverware and food packaging to a high-quality resin.

Resin price report: Has resin pricing hit bottom?
Plastics Today
It was a very interesting week for the resin markets, according to the PlasticsExchange: Activity was heightened compared with recent weeks but still shy of year-ago levels. Polyethylene and polypropylene pricing initially continued a cent lower, but then recovered as one major PE producer announced that it would implement a 15% worldwide reduction of its PE operating rates, writes the resin clearinghouse in its Market Update.

Recycling: What's ahead in advanced sorting technology
Plastics Technology
Reports published almost daily refer to the abysmally low plastic recycling rates, with the national average in the U.S. and globally still hovering around the single-digit mark. While the corresponding data from the European Union is definitely higher, it’s safe to say that a lot of work is still needed and that there is no “silver bullet” to tackle this issue. Several coordinated actions, already on the move, are required to accelerate scale-up of recycling rates.

Polyfil, a Kafrit Group company, together with Kafrit IL and N3Cure (an Israeli based Start Up) provides solutions for UV curing systems and CROSSITOL® masterbatches. Crosslinking enables the production of recyclable packaging with a single-polymer structure (Mono-material), saving costs and reducing the consumption of fossil-based polymers. As a result, it will have a smaller effect on the environment than most plastic solutions.
CROSSITOL® masterbatches can be used in a wide range of applications including cast and blown film extrusion. Its technology is coupled with N3Cure’s curing system to target specific layers for crosslinking, downgauging, and production costs.

Prices of all 5 commodity resins drop
Plastics Technology
Falling prices of all five volume commodity resins was the trend going into the second half of the third quarter, and it appeared that could continue to the latter half, barring any major production disruptions such as from a hurricane. Among the driving factors were low demand due to the slowed economy, more than ample supplier inventories in some cases, a drop in exports and lower feedstock costs.
