Plastics sector jumps from eighth to sixth largest US industry

Accounting for nearly one million jobs and $468 billion in shipments in 2021, the US plastics industry moved up in ranking from the eighth to sixth largest industry in the country, according to the Plastics Industry Association. If you include captive plastic products — such as automotive assembly or milk bottling plants — and the associated supply chain, the size of the industry balloons to just over $600 billion.

High-strength pultruded thermoplastic composites made of new raw material

Skoltech researchers have enhanced pultrusion — a technology used to produce fiber-reinforced polymers of constant cross-section — profiles. These are light and stiff composite materials made of plastic and glass or carbon fibers. They do not rust, can be welded, are suitable for recycling, and could someday replace steel and aluminum in civil engineering, marine construction, and elsewhere.

Resin price report: Spot PP prices remain well discounted to contracts

The spot resin markets returned to a more active pace following the three-day Labor Day weekend, reports the PlasticsExchange in its Market Update. Buyers began poking around for material on Tuesday, Sept. 6, but nary a fresh Prime railcar was seen from producers, although some off-grade cars flowed and there was ample warehoused material to provide liquidity to the marketplace.
