New injection-molding tool could help reduce scrappage
The Engineer    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A tool created at the National Physical Laboratory could help plastic injection-molded parts manufacturers improve cycle times and reduce scrappage. NPL's pvT (pressure-volume-temperature) and thermal conductivity test kit measures the thermo-physical properties of polymers, which will help designers find the exact pvT and shrinkage properties of a material. Stock markets may be down but plastic machinery sales remain brisk
Plastics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Global stock markets are getting hammered this year, but plastics processing machinery manufacturers in Germany and Italy continue to earn blue chip results. The trade associations representing those manufacturers in both countries shared their look on the year-to-date results and offered predictions for sales through the end of 2011. If the glass ball is telling the truth, then machine makers have reason to smile. More

North American PET bottle resin prices up 4 cents per pound
Plastics News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Tightness in raw material supplies has sent North American prices for PET bottle resin up by an average of 4 cent per pound since Sept. 1. Paraxylene feedstock, in particular, has been in tight supply, according to buyers contacted recently by Plastics News. Higher prices for paraxylene, in turn, have driven up prices for purified terephthalic acid feedstock, which has its U.S. prices tied to paraxylene on a formula basis. More

A fully functional, fast switching and printable transistor in cheap plastic
Nanowerk News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A fully functional, fast switching and printable transistor in cheap plastic is invented by researcher Lars Herlogsson of Linkoping University in Sweden. His thesis claims that with the help of polymers, plastics, which are already manufactured on a large scale, it is possible to manufacture transistors that are fast and can run on small printed batteries, where the drive voltage is around one volt. Falling Indian rupee makes polymer imports costlier
Platts    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The fall in India's rupee against the dollar is making the cost of polymer resins higher and has been a cause for concern amongst local buyers, sources told Platts this week. "All traders are bleeding right now," said an Indian trader. "With the 7-9 percent depreciation in the currency, our cost has been increasing." More

ORNL discovers amazing electrical properties in polymers
R&D Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Crystals and ceramics pale when compared to a material researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory discovered that has 10 times their piezoelectric effect, making it suitable for perhaps hundreds of everyday uses. ORNL's Volker Urban and colleagues at Technical University Aachen in Germany noticed the reverse piezoelectric effect — defined as creating a mechanical strain by applying an electrical voltage — while conducting fundamental research on polymers. Taming the wild polymers
Recycling Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Plastics once considered difficult or impossible to recycle are being converted into fuels. Items such as carpeting, construction and demolition plastics, tires and industrial polymer scrap that most often are shipped to a landfill for disposal now are being collected by energy producers that have developed technology that can turn this material into crude oil, natural gas or other fuel products. Several common methods are used to convert plastics to energy. More
