Resin price report: Market turns slightly bullish
Plastics Today
Spot resin trading continued to improve in the first week of November, with completed volumes exceeding those from the last week of October, which was already the best tally since May, reports the PlasticsExchange in its Market Update.
While the spot market is still generally well supplied across most commodity-grade resins, the flow of fresh railcar offers has diminished.

Can insects munch their way through our plastic problem?
Sciworthy
The invention of plastic improved human lives in many ways, but it has also created a lot of waste. Plastic waste can take centuries to fully break down, leading to long-lasting pollution of the land and sea. So far, research has discovered many species of bacteria that can break down plastic, but industry has not scaled this process up.

Brands boost PCR again in 2021, but use more virgin plastic
Plastics Recycling Update
The Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s latest report showed that major packaging companies doubled their collective PCR percentage from 2018 to 2021. However, pandemic-related commerce trends also helped accelerate virgin plastic consumption.
According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Global Commitment 2022 report, the total PCR content percentage has doubled among signatory companies, from 4.8% in 2018 to 10.0% in 2021.

When to trim your hedges: Purchasing raw materials as a molder
Plastics Today
As an injection molder, you rely upon access to raw materials to manufacture your products. And, of course, your goal is to maximize your profits. When considering ways to cut costs, understanding the practice of hedging — and knowing when to trim your hedges — can influence your profitability as a molder and help you protect yourself against financial losses.

Smart plastic material eyed for next-gen soft robots, electronics
Design News
Researchers have taken inspiration from living things such as trees and shellfish to create a new plastic material that is both flexible and strong, showing a toughness that's 10 times more than that of natural rubber, they said.
A team at The University of Texas at Austin used a unique process that involved applying light and a catalyst to change the properties of a material. Their aim was to mimic natural materials that can be hard and rigid in some places and soft and flexible in others, they said.

Polymer chemistry poised to make plastic waste traceable
Royal Society of Chemistry
Earlier this year, over 190 nations agreed to negotiate a legally binding treaty to address plastic pollution, energizing efforts by governments, industry and international institutions to improve plastic recycling rates. The lack of a recognized system for tracing the origin of plastic products is part of the challenge of managing plastic waste.

Polyfil, a Kafrit Group company, together with Kafrit IL and N3Cure (an Israeli based Start Up) provides solutions for UV curing systems and CROSSITOL® masterbatches. Crosslinking enables the production of recyclable packaging with a single-polymer structure (Mono-material), saving costs and reducing the consumption of fossil-based polymers. As a result, it will have a smaller effect on the environment than most plastic solutions.
CROSSITOL® masterbatches can be used in a wide range of applications including cast and blown film extrusion. Its technology is coupled with N3Cure’s curing system to target specific layers for crosslinking, downgauging, and production costs.

The pursuit of reality in extrusion and elsewhere
Plastics Today
What am I thankful for?
Life, that I have lived to super-senior status — for us, the future is now —with a conscious and open mind, clear voice, and plenty to say.
Liberty, which allows me to cooperate with others, and be free from self-indulgence. And the pursuit of reality, especially in science, where the need to believe the impossible has affected popular beliefs about plastics (and food, health, and a lot more).
