US plastics machinery shipments decline in 3rd quarter
Plastics Today
Are we in a recession? If not, are we headed for one? And will it be narrow and fairly moderate, or widespread and severe? There are many questions floating around about this weird economy, and precious few unequivocal answers. The just-released Q3 report on shipments of primary plastics machinery sheds some light on where we are and where we’re headed, at least from a plastics industry perspective.

Higher plastic values alleviate some sting from fiber markets
Resource Recycling
Prices for fiber bales are still searching for rock bottom this fall, with OCC down by about 25% over the past month. PET and HDPE bales are showing notable price increases, however.
The national average price for corrugated containers dropped $10 per ton, from an average $40 per ton last month to a current average of $30 per ton. This compares with $160 per ton this time last year.

Demonstrating the effectiveness of photoluminescence spectroscopy for plastic accumulation
AZO Materials
A paper recently published in Scientific Reports demonstrated the effectiveness of a novel strategy based on photoluminescence spectroscopy and machine learning-based theoretical analysis for plastic litter identification in the environment.
Plastic pollution is one of the key environmental issues affecting the world due to the large-scale accumulation of plastic debris in the environment, specifically the aquatic environment, which can be attributed to the extremely low plastic recycling rates.

Resin price report: Relative stability expected through end of year
Plastics Today
Resin trading was marked by mismatched availability and price expectations last week. Prime railcars were largely available across the full slate of commodity polyethylene and polypropylene grades, but this was not necessarily the case for packaged material ready to go, according to the PlasticsExchange.

'Innovation boom' in plastics says patent firm
MRW
Patent filings for biodegradable, butylene-based, polymers have more than doubled since 2018, reports intellectual property law firm Appleyard Lees.
Its Inside Green Innovation: Progress Report 2022 noted an "innovation boom" in innovations for these plastics since 2018, with patent filings growing from 26 to 56 in 2020.

Fiber and plastic exports drop 8% and 22%
Resource Recycling
U.S. companies exported less scrap paper and plastic during the first nine months of this year, an analysis of federal trade data shows. The U.S. exported about 12.4 million short tons of recovered fiber over the course of the first three quarters, down 8% from the same period in 2021. In terms of plastics, the country exported 737 million pounds during the first nine months of 2022, down 22% year over year.

How plastics are driving EV proliferation
Plastics Today
The European Union is the global frontrunner in the adoption of electric vehicles: Member countries are responsible for more than a quarter of the world’s EV production, and EVs represented roughly 20% of its new-car sales in 2021.
Yet a larger uptake of EVs will require a major build-out of Europe’s EV-charging infrastructure. In 2021, the continent had an estimated 375,000 charging stations.

Promoted by Polyfil
Polyfil, a Kafrit Group company, together with Kafrit IL and N3Cure (an Israeli based Start Up) provides solutions for UV curing systems and CROSSITOL® masterbatches. Crosslinking enables the production of recyclable packaging with a single-polymer structure (Mono-material), saving costs and reducing the consumption of fossil-based polymers. As a result, it will have a smaller effect on the environment than most plastic solutions.
CROSSITOL® masterbatches can be used in a wide range of applications including cast and blown film extrusion. Its technology is coupled with N3Cure’s curing system to target specific layers for crosslinking, downgauging, and production costs.

Beyond the bottle: Solutions for recycling challenging plastics
McKinsey & Company
Although demand for recycled plastics continues to accelerate — driven, in part, by commitments from brand owners to incorporate recycled content into their products — the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency indicates that the U.S. recycling rate remains at around 9%. Together, several factors limit U.S. recycling: consumer behavior, lack of access to recycling, the sortation of challenging plastics, and insufficient recycling capacity.
