Solvent-based process shows promise for recycling multilayer plastics
Plastics Today
Multilayer plastic materials have found their way into thousands of applications in food and medical packaging. They keep out light, oxygen, and moisture, preventing sterile syringes from fouling and lengthening the shelf life of food. According to a news release from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, about 100 million tons of multilayer thermoplastics — each composed of as many as 12 layers of varying polymers — are produced globally each year.

Collaboration develops novel packaging material from mixed post-consumer plastics
European Plastic Product Manufacturer
DSM, SABIC, Cepsa, Fibrant and Viscofan have created a multi-barrier casing for meat products made via advanced recycling of post-consumer plastics.
The development of this packaging material underlines a strong commitment to enabling a circular economy by working with partners throughout the value chain, and addresses the increasing consumer, societal and regulatory demand for more sustainable multi-layer barrier casing solutions.

Weekly resin report: Traditional December discounts may not materialize
Plastics Today
Thanksgiving week was marked by mixed spot resin trading activity, with better-than-expected polyethylene demand more notable than the continued lack of polypropylene, reports the PlasticsExchange in its Market Update. Export buyers raised their bids, which helped to clean up the lower side of the Houston pricing spectrum, but not enough to move the needle on benchmark prices, which held steady across the board. Completed volumes in November at the PlasticsExchange trading desk tallied among the lowest of 2020.

Medical packaging innovation overdrive
Plastics Today
A great deal of thought and engineering goes into the design of medical packaging, from material selection and rigorous testing to sterility assurance. But consider this scenario, as outlined by Rod Patch, Senior Director, Johnson & Johnson, during his presentation, “Driving Innovation in Medical Device Packaging,” on Dec. 2 at Virtual Engineering Week.

Researchers combine AI-guided robots and chemical recycling to address plastic pollution crisis
Canadian Plastics
Researchers at the University at Buffalo in northern New York are using a robotic sorting system as a key component in developing a novel set of tools that aim to reduce plastic waste.
The robotic system relies on machine learning and other technologies to autonomously improve its ability to sort plastics, as well as environmentally responsible solvents and new chemistries that breakdown plastics to make them easier to reuse.

Promoted by HP 3D Printing
In this business climate, there are many advantages to a "pay-as-you-go" business model when the focus is on outcomes. Capital expenses are transformed into operating expenses, spread over time. Paying on a usage basis puts the focus on your business results rather than equipment or transactions. HP Jet Fusion 3D Printing Solutions are reinventing design and manufacturing. From accelerating design cycles, to printing full-color functional parts, to running efficient volume production with repeatable part quality.
