HOMEPAC, the political action committee of the Texas Association of Builders, announces its endorsement of incumbent David Dewhurst in the upcoming race for Texas Lieutenant Governor. The highly-coveted Star Awards are given annually to recognize excellence in all areas of the home building industry. Participation is restricted to builders, remodelers, developers and associates who are members in good standing with the Texas Association of Builders. Texas population grows quickly, Census data shows

The population in Texas is well on its way to 27 million, according to new estimates released Monday by the U.S. Census Bureau. The bureau's 2013 estimate for the Texas population is 26,448,193, which is up more than 1.3 million from the 2010 Census figure of 25,145,561. More

Luxe home buys boomed in North Texas last year

High-priced home sales soared in Texas and the Dallas-Fort Worth area in 2013, the Texas Association of Realtors reports. Sales of houses priced over $1 million rose by 22 percent in the DFW area in 2013 compared with 2012. More than 800 luxury residential properties were sold by Realtors in North Texas in just the first 10 months of the year. More

U.S. construction spending rose in November at the strongest pace in more than four years, driven by solid gains in home construction and commercial projects. The Commerce Department said construction spending increased 1% in November to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $934.4 billion. That's the fastest rate since March 2009 and a slight improvement on the revised 0.9 percent gain in October. More

Apartment rents rising as vacancies drop

Rents are rising and apartment vacancy rates are falling across the country. The latest report by Reis, the real estate research firm, says the vacancy rate fell to just 4.1 percent in the fourth quarter of last year — the lowest since 2001. The results offer little relief to renters, who have seen rents rise at a faster rate than wages or inflation. Landlords charged 3.2 percent more in 2013, but the increases were higher in some parts of the country. More

Prices of pre-owned homes were up 9.7 percent from October 2012 in the monthly Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller Home Price Index. October was a good month for Texas' housing market, according to the latest report by Irvine, Calif.-based CoreLogic.
