Eye on the economy: Home building on the rise in 2014

The prospects for home building in 2014 are bright. NAHB is forecasting a nearly 25 percent gain in total housing starts, with a 32 percent pickup in single-family construction. And the coming year will come atop the gains of 2013. NAHB expects that the final numbers will show that housing starts expanded almost 18 percent last year to a total of 921,000. More



Dallas-area home builders can't keep up with demand for new houses

North Texas homebuilders couldn't keep up with buyers in the final months of 2013, as new home sales rose to the highest point in more than four years. Builders sold 5,218 new homes in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in the fourth quarter. But starts for the three months came in at only 4,514 houses — the lowest quarterly production in almost two years. Texas businesses set to save after margins tax adjustment

Some 26,000 businesses in Texas are expected to see some tax savings this year as changes to the state's franchise tax kick in. The Austin American-Statesman reports that the changes, which took effect on Jan. 1, give businesses the opportunity to deduct $1 million from their gross receipts for the franchise tax, also known as the margins tax. The changes were approved by the Texas Legislature in 2013. More

San Antonio housing market posts best year since 2006

The San Antonio housing market recorded more than 23,000 home sales last year, the highest number since the height of the real estate boom. Last year, 23,390 homes were sold in the area, according to data from the San Antonio Board of Realtors. The most home sales on record for the San Antonio area was 25,286 in 2006. More

Developer to build 1,250 homes in Leander

North Carolina-based Crescent Communities said it has purchased 500 acres of land in Leander and will build a 1,250-home master-planned community. The name of the Leander project was not disclosed. The sale of the property, which is located near U.S. Highway 183A and the Capital Metro MetroRail station, closed Jan. 8. More

HomeAid brings new life to female veterans shelter

HomeAid Houston, a Greater Houston Builders Association charity, recently dedicated a remodel project for Santa Maria Hostel, a shelter that provides services for single women and female veterans. HomeAid and builder captain, Leslie King with Greymark Construction, came together to renovate three common areas at the Santa Maria Jacquelyn Street location that are designated for group meetings, a media center and downtime activities such as reading and journaling. The space is designed to provide a warm environment for Santa Maria's female veterans' program called VIEWS. More

Less than 1 percent of Texas homes in foreclosure

At the end of November 2013, 0.9 percent of all outstanding mortgages in Texas were in some stage of foreclosure, according to the latest National Foreclosure Report by Irvine, Calif.-based CoreLogic. The country's housing sector ended 2013 with a growing number of homeowners headed in the right direction when it came to their mortgages, according to a recent analysis by Irvine, Calif.-based RealtyTrac. A total of 9.3 million residential properties were "deeply underwater," according to RealtyTrac's U.S. Home Equity & Underwater Report for December 2013.
