Housing market shows healthy local economy

If the housing market can take the temperature of the local economy, then Lubbock should receive a clean bill of health based on recent market reports. Lubbock Land Co. and Title One both completed surveys of the local housing market, and while the data differed slightly between the two reports, both studies pointed to a strong recovery from the national recession. Early voting for Democratic and Republican primaries started Feb. 18 and ends Feb. 28. Election day is March 4. Texas voters are now required by law to provide a valid photo ID in order to vote in elections. For a list of acceptable forms of ID, visit the Texas Department of Public Safety website. Killeen, Cove OK construction of $3 million in homes

Estimated values for new home construction almost reached $3 million in Killeen and Copperas Cove between Feb. 14 and last Thursday. Killeen issued 19 new home permits for $2.6 million in estimated construction cost, according to a city report. The new residences were valued between $94,000 and $191,000. More

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said it will place the Georgetown and Salado salamanders on the threatened species list. The salamanders have been a contentious issue for both environmentalists and some community officials, who have struggled over how to protect the animals while preserving development opportunities. The full impact of the decision won't be clear until the Fish and Wildlife service sets rules for how the salamanders will be protected, according to a report in the Austin American-Statesman. More
