NAHB    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Sales of newly built, single-family homes rose 3.6 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 372,000 units in July from an upwardly revised pace in the previous month, according to recent figures released by HUD and the U.S. Census Bureau. "Sales of new homes in July returned to the same solid pace they set in May, which was the fastest sales rate we'd seen in more than two years," said Barry Rutenberg, chairman of the National Association of Home Builders. Residential property values stable, but industrial base growing
Houston Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Some industries and select neighborhoods are booming, but it could be a year or more before overall property values in Houston show noticeable growth, Harris County Appraisal District Chief Appraiser Jim Robinson said. Robinson certified tax rolls recently, sending local governments the information they need to begin setting tax rates this fall. Property values county-wide increased 1.58 percent, to $279.9 billion, Robinson said, though he expects a roughly 2 percent increase after all appraisal protests are final. More

3 reasons mortgage rates are rising
BankingMyWay via The Street    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Mortgage rates are up for the fourth week in a row, and that has inquiring minds asking one big question: Is the most attractive interest rate environment in history coming to an end? The latest numbers from Freddie Mac reveal that 30-year fixed mortgage interest rates are still well under 4 percent, at 3.66 percent. Nevertheless, this is a trend that has economists taking a closer look. More

Oil holds above $112; Isaac whips up supply concern
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Oil steadied above $112 on Tuesday as tropical storm Isaac neared hurricane strength in the Gulf of Mexico, forcing companies to close down U.S. oil rigs and refineries. Gains may be limited by worries that hurricane damage could prompt refiners to cut crude oil purchases in coming weeks and on heightened expectations that Western governments, led by the United States, may tap into strategic oil reserves. Austin American-Statesman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There's a new sheriff in town, so to speak, who could rework Austin's skyline. Terry Keel, a former prosecutor, sheriff and GOP lawmaker from Austin is in charge of the Texas Facilities Commission which, armed with the Legislature's new empowering public private partnerships, will be reshaping a neighborhood close to you — or the Capitol complex surrounding the Pink Dome. San Antonio Express-News Texas Politics Blog    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The last time Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst as asked what he plans to do in 2014, it was soon after he lost the U.S. Senate nomination to Ted Cruz. He asked if reporters minded giving him a couple of days. It looks like he has thought about it long enough. More

Homebuilding revival sparks rush for best California land
Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Guy Asaro, president of McMillin Homes LLC, bought three land parcels in Texas this year while coming up empty in the San Diego area, where the closely held builder is based. Ready-to-build lots around San Antonio, where McMillin has constructed houses since 2005, cost $55,000 to $70,000, or as little as one-sixth the going price in San Diego, Asaro said. He keeps searching in California, the most populous state, because a little land in the right place can yield a big return. More

The Texas Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Gov. Rick Perry named Michael Williams the new commissioner of the Texas Education Agency. Delegate deal snuffs Texas rebellion
Houston Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Republican leaders hastened to quell an uprising by Texans and Ron Paul supporters that threatened to steal the spotlight from Mitt Romney and expose rifts in the party just as its nominating convention got under way. Under a late-night compromise, Romney supporters and GOP leaders agreed to back down from a proposed rule change that effectively would have allowed presidential nominees to choose which delegates represent them at national conventions. Isaac threat to Gulf Coast well beyond New Orleans
The Associated Press via El Paso Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
With its massive size and ponderous movement, Tropical Storm Isaac was gaining strength as it headed toward the Gulf Coast. The next 24 hours would determine whether it brought the usual punishing rains and winds — or something even more destructive harkening back to the devastation wrought seven years ago by Hurricane Katrina. The focus has been on New Orleans as Isaac takes dead aim at the city, but the impact will be felt well beyond the city limits. The storm's winds could be felt more than 200 miles from the storm's center. More

4 Ike public housing options offered in Galveston
Austin American-Statesman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Leaders of a Southeast Texas city still recovering from Hurricane Ike will consider four public housing options ranging from rental vouchers to rebuilding. Galveston Housing Authority members voted to offer the recommendations. City leaders must decide on replacing 569 units destroyed in the 2008 hurricane or risk losing $586 million in government assistance. A federal agreement reached two years ago requires rebuilding. County Commissioners hold second hearing on tax rate increase
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Lubbock County Commissioners Court's second public hearing on a planned 1.7-percent increase in the property tax rate turned out a few more nays than yeas, but how large the margin depended on whose scorecard you examined. There was agreement among County Judge Tom Head and commissioners Gilbert Flores and Patti Jones that nine of the 26 speakers favored the increase. Among the nays, however, at least five offered a split opinion. More

Retrofitting vs. new green construction: Which is greener?
EarthTechling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The subject of green building is rife with contradiction. Sure, LEED-certified structures consume less energy than those simply built to code. But constructing a building of almost any sort tends to be an energy-intensive process, and even a home built to cut its carbon emissions by 50 percent still carries more eco-guilt than, say, the average family car. Isaac not expected to bring rain or evacuees to North Texas
Fort Worth Star-Telegram    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As strengthening Isaac moved slowly toward the upper Gulf Coast, the possible impact of the storm on North Texas appeared to be diminishing. Forecasters were saying the projected paths of the storm were unlikely to bring rain to North Texas, and with no mandatory evacuations called for in New Orleans, it seemed unlikely that the Dallas-Fort Worth region was going to see a repeat of 2005, when thousands of evacuees arrived after Hurricane Katrina.
