US investigates potential terrorist test run

Two men arrested in Amsterdam may have been conducting a dry run for a potential terrorist attack, U.S. officials said Tuesday after a cell phone taped to a Pepto-Bismol bottle and a knife and box cutters were found in one of the men's luggage. U.S. investigators are pursuing leads in Detroit, Birmingham, Ala.; and Memphis, Tenn., according to officials speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation. The arrests come at a time of heightened alert just days before the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks. More

Marking the end of the United States' combat mission in Iraq, President Barack Obama will arrive at Fort Bliss at 10:30 a.m. today to meet with about 150 soldiers, many of whom have served multiple deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan. While on post, the president will speak with soldiers as well a select group of family members and have lunch. More

U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson awarded eight scholarships last year to her grandsons and a top aide's children — bringing to 23 the number of awards she handed out since 2005 in violation of Congressional Black Caucus Foundation eligibility rules. The Dallas Morning News reported Sunday that over the last five years, the Dallas Democrat has awarded up to $20,000 in 15 scholarships to two grandsons, two great-nephews, and aide Rod Givens' children between 2005 and 2008. More Texans fall behind on mortgage bills

More Texans have fallen behind in their mortgage payments, the latest industry research shows. In the second quarter, 9.28 percent of Texas homeowners with loans had late payments, the Mortgage Bankers Association reported. That's up from 8.77 percent in the first quarter, according to the Washington, D.C.-based mortgage industry trade group. More

A Texas-based Predator unmanned aircraft will begin surveillance flights and National Guardsmen will start to arrive at the U.S.-Mexico border this week as part of the Obama administration's plan to strengthen security and combat smuggling, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said. Napolitano announced in a conference call that the Predator drone would begin flights Wednesday to provide "critical aerial surveillance assistance to personnel on the ground." More

The Hurricane Ike-battered dike in Texas City will reopen Sept. 11. Officials say repairs are being completed for the dike to reopen two days before the second anniversary of the hurricane. Boat ramps, fishing piers and bait camps lined the 5-mile-long dike before Ike stormed ashore. The pier was built to protect the Texas City ship channel, but became one of the busiest fishing and boating spots on the Texas coast. More
