Federal investigators boarded the Mariner Energy Inc. oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico Friday to investigate the Sept. 2 fire and an oil sheen spotted near the platform, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. A Coast Guard helicopter flew over the scene Friday, and crew noticed a small oil sheen near the offshore platform that was about 100 hundred yards long and 10 yard wide. However, the Coast Guard believes the sheen is petroleum runoff caused by fire-fighting efforts. More

Watson begs Combs to address state budget troubles
Austin American-Statesman First Reading Blog    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
Sen. Kirk Watson wrote a pointed, six-page letter to Comptroller Susan Combs last week, asking her to provide "badly needed information" about the state's fiscal health. Combs has provided little official information about the severity of the state's fiscal outlook, which has raised suspicions that she is trying to protect Gov. Rick Perry until the November elections. But Watson, D-Austin, told her on the first day of the 2011 fiscal year that Texans, and lawmakers, need answers now. More

Tropical Storm Hermine crosses into Texas
Associated Press via Houston Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Tropical Storm Hermine began to lose its punch as it pushed north Tuesday, after causing landslides in northeast Mexico and leaving one Texas town almost entirely without power. As when Hurricane Alex lashed the same flood-prone Rio Grande Valley in June, there was a feeling that Hermine could have been worse. There were no reports of serious injuries or major damage early Tuesday, and authorities ordered no evacuations. More

Bill White calls for cutting tourism advertising
El Paso Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Gubernatorial candidate Bill White has found at least one multimillion dollar program Texas can do without: commercials and advertisements promoting Texas. The Democrat recently said he would ax money for such advertising as one way to save the state money. "There are certain things we ought to take a machete to," he said when asked which programs could be eliminated. "The advertising budget right out of the governor's office has gone up from about $6,000 in 2001 to $22 million-plus today. We can't afford that." More

Perry: White must release more income taxes or no debate
San Antonio Express-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
GOP Gov. Rick Perry upped the ante on the question of debating Democratic candidate Bill White on Thursday, saying he won’t do it unless White releases additional income tax returns by Sept. 15. Perry has repeatedly said he said he won’t debate White unless the Democrat releases his returns from his time as deputy energy secretary under Clinton and as Texas Democratic Party chairman. Thursday was the first time Perry put a due date on his demand. More

The dogs at DogBoy's Dog Ranch appear to be relatively happy. The canines at the 15-acre facility can gaze at gently rolling rural land when they're not gnawing at balls, splayed out for a doggie massage or getting an adjustment the facility offers dog chiropractic services. And, thanks to an extensive solar panel system partly paid for by the federal government, the 75 or so dogs can sleep in air-conditioned comfort in the kennels that board them. More

White unveils border security plan
Houston Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Plunging into the contentious issue of border security, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill White called for a thousand new local law enforcement personnel and 250 state troopers to police the state's border region. His proposal, part of a six-point plan to secure the Texas-Mexico border, is, in White's words, "a comprehensive approach to dealing with this issue." More

State tries to spur school cost sharing
Amarillo Globe-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
Texas could offer school districts a carrot to share out-of-classroom costs this fall before at least one senator prods them with a stick. Gov. Rick Perry recently stopped in Lubbock to lay out a state grant incentive for school districts to split the bills on their human resources, accounting, transportation and other administrative needs.
