Homeowners tell Texas lawmakers about mortgage company mistakes
Dallas Morning News    Share   Share
on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Homeowners told lawmakers during a hearing Monday about mortgage company mistakes — including sending information to wrong addresses and refusing to return repeated calls — that led to their homes facing foreclosure. The Senate Business and Commerce committee's hearing was held in the wake of the attorney general's office demanding that 30 large mortgage lenders operating in Texas halt foreclosures, short sales and evictions because of complaints about their processes. Home prices in 20 US cities rose less than forecast in August
Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Home prices in 20 U.S. cities rose at a slower pace than forecast in August from a year earlier, reflecting slumping sales as the effects of a tax credit waned. The S&P/Case-Shiller index of property values increased 1.7 percent from August 2009, the smallest year-over-year gain since February, the group said. Fifteen of the 20 cities saw prices decline in August from the prior month, led by a 1.3 percent decline in Phoenix and a 1.1 percent drop in Dallas. More

The $21 billion elephant in the room
Houston Chronicle Texas Politics Blog    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The one issue that neither Gov. Rick Perry nor former Houston Mayor Bill White seem to want to address head on is the projected $21 billion state budget. But let's take a look at state government spending and see what $21 billion means. Perry says he fixed a $10 billion shortfall in 2003 and can do it again. He doesn't want to talk about the size until Comptroller Susan Combs issues the official estimate next year. White says he can save at least $1 billion by renegotiating vendor contracts. Otherwise, he blames Perry for the mess we're in. More

Perry shows major money edge in final stretch
Austin American-Statesman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Republican Gov. Rick Perry has spent $10 million more than Democratic challenger Bill White in the past month and appears likely to out-spend him up until Election Day next week, according to campaign finance reports filed with the state. Perry spent $16.1 million between Sept. 24 and Oct. 23, compared with White's $6.1 million. Perry also raised more than White during that period, leaving him with $2 million available to spend and White with about $500,000. More

Perry, White spar over immigration after emotional new TV ad
Austin American-Statesman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In an emotional new ad featuring the widow of a slain Houston police officer, GOP Gov. Rick Perry's campaign suggests that the city's approach to immigration under former Mayor Bill White led to the officer's death in 2006. On Monday, White, Perry's Democratic challenger, strongly denounced the ad. "He's exploiting shamelessly the grief of a widow," White told reporters in Austin. "He's making false, negative campaign ads to try to hide his own record" on border security. More

Dallas Morning News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A bill to allow guns in college campus buildings died in the last legislative session, but supporters say they're cautiously optimistic about its chances next year. In 2009, "We did have overwhelming support in the Texas Legislature," said Scott Lewis, Texas Legislative Director for Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, noting that the bill passed the Senate by a vote of 20-11 and that 75 representatives signed on as co-authors. San Antonio Express-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A body found buried in a shallow grave on a ranch near Athens was identified as the missing son of former Texas Gov. Bill Clements, a sheriff said. B. Gill Clements, 69, was apparently shot to death, although no official cause of death has been released, Henderson County Sheriff Ray Nutt said. Nutt said officials suspect the likely killer was the property owner, who neighbors say used an assault rifle to guard his property. More
