Building boom towns: Metro areas with the most new construction In 2014
While the rest of the country struggled to recover from the recession, the economy in Texas has been on fire. Thanks to a boom in horizontal drilling and fracking, the state's oil output has more than doubled over the past three years to 3.18 million barrels per day — a level not seen since 1976. That's sparked a surge in construction around the nation's oil capital, Houston — residential, manufacturing, office, and even the occasional hotel — a development that makes it a poster child for the construction recovery happening around the country.

D-FW on track to be second busiest home building market in 2015

The Dallas-Fort Worth area should be the second busiest home building market in the country in 2015, according to a new forecast. MetroStudy Inc predicts that only Houston will have more single-family home starts next year in a comparison of the country's top building markets. D-FW home starts are forecast to top 28,000 units next year, compared with the Houston area's more than 37,000 starts.

The head of Battleground Texas is telling supporters that despite an Election Day-shellacking, the group plans to stay put for the next round of elections in 2016. In a memo posted on the group's website, executive director Jenn Brown says Battleground Texas is analyzing what went wrong. "I know that the losses last week were tough, and there has been a lot of negativity in the aftermath of the election. But I want you to look forward with me. Because we have work to do," said Brown.

The Woodlands home prices among the top in Texas

Houses in The Woodlands are among the most costly in the state of Texas, but are still below the national average, according to a new report. The Coldwell Banker Home Listing Report ranked nearly 2,000 markets across the country based on the average listing price of four-bedroom, two-bathroom homes. The report examined the pricing of more than 51,000 similar homes to come up with an average of $295,317.

Housing market surging in the Lone Star State

This year will be the second-best year ever for the Texas housing market, according to researchers at the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University. In a report by the center, economist Dr. Jim Gaines said, "Last year was the second best year in the state of Texas for home sales volume. It was second only to 2006, which was at the height of the housing boom and all the easy financing. And 2013 wasn't that far off from that. This is going to become the new second best year ever. We have having a really terrific year."

Construction industry building toward a strong finish for 2014

After a disappointing third quarter, the construction industry regained momentum in October, with signs pointing to continued growth in the months ahead. Indicators were up across the board, including employment figures, with most areas of the industry reporting notable year-over-year increases. Early forecasts are that 2015 will look even better. If the economy continues to improve, some categories — such as commercial and residential — could see double-digit increases in the year ahead.

Survey shows Texas construction companies are struggling to find workers

An astounding 83 percent of construction firms around the nation are having trouble finding enough workers and the numbers in Texas are even worse, according to a new survey conducted by the Associated General Contractors of America. AGC surveyed 1,086 companies in late August and early September and said not only were the vast majority of them struggling to find craft workers, but 61% said the same about recruitment for key professional positions. Drilling down into the Texas numbers, 90 percent of construction companies faced serious challenges in finding enough craft professionals and half of them are quickly losing workers to other industries.

DR Horton's home building revenue grows 33 percent

Texas home builder D. R. Horton reported net income for the fourth fiscal quarter ended Sept. 30, 2014 of $166.3 million, or $0.45 per diluted share, compared to $139.5 million, or $0.40 per diluted share, in the same quarter of fiscal 2013. Also on the rise, home building revenue for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2014 increased 33 percent to $2.4 billion from $1.8 billion in the same quarter of 2013.
