Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Construction spending in the U.S. unexpectedly rose in October, lifted by the biggest gain in residential projects in six months. The 0.7 percent increase matched the previous month's gain and brought spending to $802.3 billion, Commerce Department figures showed. The median estimate of economists in a Bloomberg survey called for a 0.3 percent drop. More

Panel's findings fail to win over Texas lawmakers
Houston Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The audacious final report of President Barack Obama's budget commission, which proposed squeezing nearly $4 trillion from federal deficits over the next decade through painful and politically explosive spending cuts and tax increases, drew mixed reviews from Texas lawmakers. While legislators from across the political spectrum praised the bipartisan panel's commitment to confronting the record-breaking budget deficits and $13.9 trillion in accumulated debt, many disagreed with the hard choices the commission made to stem the tide of red ink. Opinion: Dewhurst focuses on session, but Senate run easy to see
Austin American-Statesman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
We've all heard that Gov. Rick Perry is not running for president in 2012. Some of us even believe that he's not. But there's another Texas Republican who leaves a much larger crack in the doorway when asked if he'll seek federal office in two years. Many believe Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst will seek a seat in the U.S. Senate when it comes open in 2012. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison now holds that seat and hasn't said whether she will seek re-election. More

Texas lawmakers discuss renewable energy at Abilene conference
Abilene Reporter-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Opposition to the construction of high-voltage transmission lines in Texas could result in a smaller-scale project than originally envisioned by state officials, State Sen. Kirk Watson told a crowd of local workforce leaders Wednesday at a conference on renewable energy and state politics. "Elected officials and regulators are working at scaling back and actually scrapping portions of the CREZ lines," Watson said, referring to the roughly $5 billion project designed to allow electricity to flow from wind farms in West Texas to the state's more heavily populated areas. Green manufacturers and technology companies are stampeding to find a home in a proposed Texas development that will put the water- and energy-saving devices of tomorrow to the test in a real-world urban setting. Texas A&M University System and a Dallas-area developer are creating a $127 million commercial and residential "incubator" where cutting-edge sensors will monitor data on everything from light bulbs to appliances and toilets. State lawmakers tell Bexar County there's little hope for wish list
San Antonio Express-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Bexar County leaders got a jarring reality check as state lawmakers portrayed the upcoming 82nd Texas Legislature as a political minefield where new funding requests will have little hope. The county has a detailed legislative agenda, with proposals to garner help with early voting costs; expedite nuisance abatement in unincorporated areas; and ease jail standards for the housing of prison-bound, "paper-ready" inmates. Villalobos: Numbers and evidence show Cascos victory
Brownsville Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
John Wood, the losing candidate for county judge, may be trying to decide whether to take legal action over the election, but the district attorney said that people should accept the result of the vote and move on. District Attorney Armando R. Villalobos made the statement one day after the Cameron County Commissioners Court canvassed the recount of the election returns, which showed that incumbent Judge Carlos H. Cascos won the election by 64 votes. More
