More waste in England is being recycled than being sent to landfill, according to figures from the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). Melbourne-based Single Serve Packaging Pty. Ltd. has already sold 350,000 Lupé Wines-branded PET single-use wine glasses to Australian, Japanese and Singaporean customers since January 2012. But 26-year-old entrepreneur Georgia Beattie, who launched the company in November 2011, has her sights set on China. She plans to create a relationship with a Chinese winemaker and start producing the glasses there in the next 12-24 months. More

Wipak opens new film line in Germany

Wipak, the flexible packaging company owned by Wihuri of Finland, has opened a blown film plant for thermoforming applications at its facility in Walsrode, Germany. Wipak said the new plant will produce thermoforming films with a high transparency, which it sells under the brand names Superclear and NICE. It will also produce films made with special formulations based on high-performance polymers and barrier material EVOH, which can provide further improved optical and mechanical properties. More

The deal for the stake in the £170 million-turnover group was announced this morning by Sun European Partners, the European arm of U.S.-based Sun Capital which has recently bought businesses including Britton Group, Albéa, Kobusch-Sengewald and Rexam's personal care business. Consumers can now buy Hershey's Bliss chocolates made with 100 percent certified cocoa. The rollout of certified Hershey's Bliss chocolates builds on The Hershey Company's programs in West Africa to increase the income and livelihoods of the region's two million cocoa farmers. In January, Hershey announced it would make all of its popular Hershey's Bliss milk, dark and white chocolates from Rainforest Alliance certified cocoa. More

Saiden Technologies becomes STI Polymer

The management of Saiden Technologies has acquired 100 percent of the company's stock from its parent company, Saiden Chemical of Japan. The company, which has been renamed STI Polymer, is a maker of acrylic emulsion polymers. It will continue to operate its plant in Sanford and will be led by its current management team, which has been in place since the plant opened in 2001. The acquisition includes full rights to the company's existing product portfolio and a technical support agreement under which STI Polymer will maintain access to Saiden Chemical's deep R&D resources. Rexam wraps up sale of its personal care business

Rexam has received approval from the Chinese authorities for the sale of part of its personal care packaging division to an affiliate of Sun European Partners. The deal, announced back in July 2012, will see the operation split between the Sub subsidiary, which is taking Rexam's cosmetics, toiletries and household care products operation, while Silgan Holdings has agreed to buy its thermoformed high-barrier food packaging business. Constar International LLC will close an injection molding plant and consolidate operations at a second facility in response to the end of a bottling contract business. FDA tracking proposal could require packaging line changes

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's medical device tracking proposal will force many manufacturers to make expensive packaging line changes. FDA proposed a unique device identification (UDI) marking system, both for many individual devices and all device packaging, with some exceptions, in response to a 2007 congressional mandate. Manufacturers have been criticizing key elements of that proposal since it was announced this past summer, forcing the FDA to reconsider some of the specifics. More
