New 'intelligent' indicator detects expired foods

A packaging system that sends out a warning when food is no longer safe to eat could soon be available to food producers and consumers. Researchers at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, north of London in the U.K., have developed an indicator, made of "intelligent plastics," which changes color when food has perished or when it has been spoiled. Packaging firm Linpac sells 5 non-core units

Linpac, a U.K.-based plastic packaging manufacturer, has sold five non-core business units to funds managed by Chamonix Private Equity. In a statement, chairman John Darlington said that Linpac sold the units to pay down debt, adding: "Even operations that are non-core require management attention, however, and the disposals have therefore released senior management time for use elsewhere in the business. It also means that we will be able to concentrate investment on our core activities in future." More

Euclid, Ohio-based InterGroup International Ltd., a recycler of post-industrial plastic scrap, will embark on an investigative mission to India beginning Jan. 12, 2011. "The mission purpose is two-fold," says Neil Gloger, InterGroup CEO. "First and foremost, we are sending a high-level delegation consisting of our Senior Buyer Gus Gatanas and our Sales Manager Zach Durant to investigate a reported security breach in our supply chain. Secondly, we are taking the first step to set up a permanent presence to have 'eyes on the ground' to further ensure our security commitments with our vendors." More

2011 will bring little let-up in input costs for the plastic packaging industry, the head of the British Plastics Federation has predicted. In comments to Packaging News on the BPF's outlook for 2011, director general Peter Davis said that the high raw materials prices and problems of availability would be an "ongoing concern" in the year to come, while energy prices would continue their upward trend.
