NYC becomes largest city in the country to ban EPS foam

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a citywide ban on expanded polystyrene foam containers and packing peanuts, which will go into effect on July 2015. EPS is already banned in cities across the country, including Washington, D.C., Minneapolis, San Francisco, Oakland, Portland, Albany and Seattle. In a news release, the mayor's office mentioned that foam manufacturer Dart Container Corp. was among the many companies it consulted with regarding this issue.

Enact buys Excelsior flexible packaging firm

SME fund, Enact has made a six-figure investment in flexible packaging company Excelsior which specializes in gravure print for the food, confectionery and medical sectors. Enact's investment will grow Excelsior in Europe and the U.S. The firm currently employs 240 staff with 180 people in Deeside, North Wales; and 60 people in Nelson, Lancashire, U.K.

Universal Flexible Packaging gets £2.3 million site investment
Packaging News
The Leicester, England-based firm announced an £11 million investment in a new factory last September and the previous site was to be sold as part of the deal. However, new plans for the factory have been funded by the Cambridge & Counties Bank, managing director Tinku Durrani, and the Durrani family property company, MANN Properties. The announcement means that as of Spring 2015, the company will be operating from 51,816m2 of production facilities.

A E Adams celebrates 50 years of contract packing

A E Adams began operation in 1965, with just two employees, founder Arthur Adams and Chris Jones, hand packing mushrooms and filling garden chemical powder products using a Hassia BM3 sachet machine. England town's citizens urged to increase plastic recycling rates

England's East Sussex County Council is supporting the government-backed Pledge 4 Plastics campaign, which urges people to recycle one extra plastic bottle per household per week. The council says recycling more plastics will help it save money which could be spent on other essential services. Plastic bottles and tubs can be remade for their original function or turned into anything from children's toys, football shirts or garden furniture to duvets, pens or kitchen utensils.

Winding Machines, Mechanics and Measurements is the definitive book on the science of winding written by noted experts Dr. David Roisum and Dr. JK Good. This three-part book (with supplemental CD-ROM) describes the various classes and arrangements of winding machinery commonly found in the web industries including discussion of controls and defects; describes how roll stresses and roll defects can be predicted by mathematical models and what factors are important; and discusses almost every method for measuring and evaluating wound roll quality. The book describes how and why many wound roll defects occur. In more than a few cases, it even describes when defects occur based on winding models that have matured to the point of trustworthy application. In these cases we have science at its best, a predictive tool. A CD with an easy-to-run winding model is included with every book. However, one need not be a scientist to appreciate and use this text. Much of it is written in everyday language describing the machines we work with, the defects we see and the many measures of roll quality. It is a book that most plants with a winding department would want to have.
