USDA turns beets into disposable, biodegradable plastic food packaging

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientists and university cooperators have developed a biodegradable plastic that could be used in disposable food containers. The thermoplastic becomes soft when heated. To make the plastic, Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists incorporated biodegradable sugar beet pulp, which is the leftover residue from sugar extraction, with a biodegradable polymer. The result is thermoplastic composites that retain mechanical properties similar to polystyrene and polypropylene, the compounds used to make white, spongy food packages. More

PolyPak America buys Transco Plastics poly mailer division

PolyPak America Inc. has expanded its poly mailer capacity by acquiring Transco Plastics Industries Ltd.'s poly mailer envelope and in-line printed films division for undisclosed terms. Iberian packaging producer Grupo Betapack, which owns a subsidiary in Brazil, has been acquired by the Madrid-based private equity firm Mercapital. Mercapital, which took an 80 percent stake in the Basque Country processor, aims to consolidate Betapack's position as a leading supplier of closures to Europe's bottled water segment and support its international expansion. Betapack moulds polyethylene and polypropylene is Europe's third ranked closure producer for the water market. More

Packaging carton manufacturer SIG Combiblock is investing €36 million in a new extrusion line, to laminate cardboard with a polymer coating, at its Brazilian plant. The investment will allow the firm to laminate unprocessed cardboard for its own brand aseptic carton packs on-site. The polymer layer will build a liquid barrier for the product, keeping moisture out, says the company. More
