The U.S. Department of Agriculture's BioPreferred program is publishing a final rule to initiate a voluntary product certification and labeling program for qualifying biobased products will be published in today's Federal Register. This new label will clearly identify biobased products made from renewable resources, and will promote the increased sale and use of these products in the commercial market and for consumers. More

Two-fifths of packaging for fresh chickens in the UK's second city carry a pathogen that can cause diarrhea and even dysentery, a study has found. The report from Birmingham City Council's Environmental Health team said that 40 percent of chickens' packaging was carrying campylobacter, a pathogen that can cause a range of stomach bugs. More

RockTenn and Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. have approved a definitive agreement under which Smurfit-Stone will become a wholly owned subsidiary of RockTenn. The aggregate consideration, consisting of 50 percent cash and 50 percent RockTenn stock, is valued at $35 per-share of Smurfit-Stone common stock, and represents a 27 percent premium to Smurfit-Stone's closing stock price on Jan. 21, 2011. Italian film machinery maker Colines will demonstrate production of two meter wide 50-layer cast stretch film at its production facility at Novara. The film production system, which is equipped with a flat die and layer multiplier system from US-based Extrusion Dies Industries (EDI), uses four extruders (two 80 millimeter and two 140 millimeter) and a 16-component gravimetric feed system.
